Mein Block is a song by the German rap musician Sido and the first single from his debut album Maske . The song was produced by Headrush Records founder Roe Beardie. A remix of the song by the Berlin producer duo Beathoavenz had already been published in advance in the German-language hip-hop magazine Juice as well as on the label sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 3 by Sido's record company Aggro Berlin , published in December 2003, and was later published also part of the official single, which was released on April 4, 2004. My block continues with life in theBerlin's Märkisches Viertel housing estate diverged and became Sido's first major chart success, reaching number 13 in the single charts in Germany and staying in the top 100 for a total of 19 weeks.

background

My block was the first collaboration between Sido and producer Roe Beardie. According to Beadie's account, this came about because Sido's record company Aggro Berlin had given Sido the opportunity to work with a musician outside of Berlin while working on his debut album Maske . Sido suggested this because of his positive earlier impressions of Beardie's productions for MC Rene and Die Coolen Säue . After the contact was made by Aggro Berlin co-owner Spaiche, there was a meeting between the two musicians, during which the first track Mein Block was created.

Before the original was released, however , the remix of the song, recorded with the producer duo Beathoavenz , was published as an exclusive song on supplement CD # 36 of the hip-hop magazine Juice in November 2003 , in order to add to the label sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 3 , on which Mein Block (Beathoavenz Remix) was also included and which positioned Sido as a solo artist for the first time with his music video for the Christmas song , which until then had mostly been active in the duo Alles ist die Sekt . In April 2004 Mein Block was finally released as the first single from Maske . In contrast to those in charge at Aggro Berlin, Sido did not consider the song to be the ideal first single, especially after it was pre-published in Juice.

In the two previous monthly issues # 34 and # 35 preceding issue # 36 of the hip-hop magazine Juice , two titles of the same name by Hecklah & Coch and Blumentopf were already published. Both songs were of the same nature as home songs, but the first-named title treated Berlin-Schöneberg, like the later Sido song, to a socially disadvantaged area, while the flowerpot version described life in the middle-class Munich city center. Although the first lines of the Sido remix ( "My block, my block, my block and not Blumentopf his block. My block, my block, my block and not Hecklah & Coch his block." ) A direct reference of his song to the two suggest, however, in an interview with journalist Marcus Staiger for Aggro.TV , Sido stated that he had not known about the existence of either title before the recording of Mein Block and only when the remix was recorded by Beathoavenz was pointed out, whereupon the beginning of the song was adjusted accordingly.

Emergence

The original version of Mein Block was created within a day, albeit by chance. According to Sido, the basic idea for the song came on the way from Düsseldorf to the Headrush studios in Cologne . After his arrival, Sido Beardie, as he explained in interviews, asked to be able to listen to a few finished beats. Beardie, although he prefers to design beats directly for the artists according to his basic working method, complied with Sido's request, whereupon the latter selected a beat that Beardie also produced on the same day while waiting for Sido's arrival in Cologne. Sido then wrote the lyrics to Mein Block and recorded the song within an hour and a half . The song was then immediately approved by Aggro Berlin.

content

Thematically, Mein Block deals with the social conditions in the Märkisches Viertel large housing estate in the Reinickendorf district of Berlin . The district image of the Märkisches Viertel is characterized by a large number of high-rise residential buildings, in which the lyrical self - just like Sido himself when the song was written - has its residence. Sido describes these high-rise estates, referred to throughout the song as a block, as a separate, self-contained parallel world. The location of the action will only be relocated between the individual residential floors. Within this depiction, the artist points to subsequent developments in the isolated residential structure, with particular emphasis on sexuality , drug consumption and trafficking, and prostitution .

In several interviews, Sido pointed out the political nature of the song, which had drawn public attention to socially disadvantaged areas and their grievances.

Track list

In addition to other remixes from Mein Block , the single also contains the instrumental version of the title and the title Steig ein, which is also included on Mask . The single also includes the song Berlin, Berlin , on which, in addition to Sido himself, his AidS collab partner B-Tight , who was also under contract with Aggro Berlin at the time of publication , and the Berlin rapper Harris , with whom Sido later formed the duo Deine Favorite rappers should be represented.

Music video

Under the direction of the co-founder of Aggro Berlin Specter , a music video for Mein Block (Beathoavenz Remix) was created in collaboration with Daniel Harder , with a verse from the piece Steig ein , which is also on Mask , used as an intro for the video. The parts of the actual feature guests Fuhrmann, Loku & Bendt contained on the remix have also been replaced by a set piece from the album track Sido aus'm Block .

The video illustrates large parts of the scenes of a satellite town described in the title . The Märkisches Viertel also serves as the setting here , although, according to Sido, his own residence and the interior of his apartment itself also served as a filming location. In addition to the then other members of Aggro Berlin Bushido , Fler and B-Tight , Mesut and Tony D, other members of Sido's and B-Tights rap crew Die Sekt, as well as other rappers from Sido's environment, such as Massiv , appear in the course of the music video.

criticism

The artistic criticism of Mein Block was mostly positive. In the course of their album review of Maske , the e-zine Laut.de identified Mein Block as one of the highlights of the album, which was rated 4 out of 5 stars. The editorial team of Rap.de also rated all the pieces on the single positively and gave it a total of 6 out of 10 stars.

On the other hand, the explicit content and linguistic usage of the title as well as subsequent publications, especially the assfuck song , were discussed more controversially . As a central aspect of this discourse, Sido's suitability as a role model for young people was called into question.

Commercial win

On April 19, 2004, Mein Block entered the German single charts at number 33 and in the following weeks reached its top position at number 13, where it was placed for a total of three weeks of sales. The single stayed in the Top 100 for 19 weeks. Even before Mein Block left the chart , the Sido songs Fuffies im Club and Arschficksong reached the charts, which meant that Sido was temporarily represented in the German Top 100 with three singles at the same time.

In Austria, the single rose to number 75 on May 16, 2004 and two weeks later it reached its highest position with number 61. Overall, the song stayed in the charts for 5 weeks. For almost two years Mein Block remained the only Sido single to be placed in the Austrian charts. Only with the entry of the single Wahlkampf from the Aggro Berlin label sampler Aggro Ansage Nr. 5 , published together with G-Hot , on March 10, 2006, Sido achieved this again, but was able to place a large number of songs in the Austrian charts in the future.

In July of the same year, both artists became violent at the HipHop Open music festival in Frankfurt am Main after Sido's comment about Azad's mother and, despite Sido's apology to the latter, they remained in the dispute in the future. It was not until 2008 that the differences were resolved with a joint song on Sido's third solo album Ich und Meine Maske .
