Puccinia acroptili is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the spring flower ( Rhaponticum repens , syn. Centaurea repens ) from the sunflower family . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is common in western North America .

Macroscopic features
Puccinia acroptili can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of Puccinia acroptili grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are so far unknown. The cinnamon-brown uredia of the fungus grow on both sides of the surface of the host leaves. Their cinnamon-brown uredospores are 23–26 × 19–23 µm in size, broadly ovate to spherical and spiky. The bilateral growing parts of the species are black-brown, powdery and uncovered. The chestnut-brown teliospores are two-celled, usually ellipsoidal and mostly 25–30 × 22–27 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and over 100 µm long.
distribution
The known distribution area of Puccinia acroptili was initially Central Asia, the original distribution area of the feather flower. Due to the invasive spread, it is now also spread in Europe and the USA. Although there are already differences in teliospores between the Eurasian and American finds, it is still considered a single species.
ecology
The host plant of Puccinia acroptili is Rhaponticum repens . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a macrocyclical development cycle with Spermogonia, Aecien, Telien and Uredien. As an auto-ecologic parasite, it does not change host .
