Mask is the debut album by the Berlin rapper Sido . It was published in April 2004 and later became the first album of the label Aggro Berlin , the Gold status reached.

successes

The album was followed by a strong expansion of the media presence of the rapper from the Berlin underground, who had been known for a long time through his work at the Royal Bunker and the sampler Aggro Ansage 1 to 3. In addition, other rappers from the Aggro Berlin label (such as Fler , Tony D and others), but also from the Berlin environment (such as Bass Sultan Hengzt ) were later given the opportunity to present themselves in video clips on the music channels and the to increase your own level of awareness.

The singles from the album are Mein Block , which was already on the Juice CD in the Beathoavenz remix version , Fuffies in the club and Mama is proud .

On January 5, 2007, Sido reported on the MTV show TRL , in which he was supposed to present his favorite videos of 2006, that 10,000 copies of Mask would have to be sold for the album to reach platinum status.

interview

Interview is the intro of the album. Sido plays himself and an interviewer who asks him questions that Sido then answers. He reports that he is 1.86 m tall, weighs 72 kg, wears glasses, lives in West Berlin , that he takes a lot of drugs, is under contract with Aggro Berlin and that his texts are "written by life".

Out of the way

The album's first battle track . This also contains a swipe at Staiger . The lines of the song are always introduced with the first letter of the sentence. (Example: "M like: Make a track, show it to me, I think it's bad / M like mom said: 'Nobody is right' / M like MCs in Germany watch out, here comes an M like man, listen to him to, he's got it! ").

hop in

The text asks the listener to get into an imaginary car to present “his city” to him. He tells of the "beautiful sides" (villas), as well as of the dark, ghetto-like sides of Berlin. At the same time he expresses his love for Berlin . Steig ein was already alluded to in the video clip of the remix of Mein Block .

My block

Sido's first single and his final breakthrough in music television. The track is a hymn to his former block in his hometown of Berlin and the answer to the song Mein Block of flowerpot . The remix produced by the Beathoavenz, which can be heard in the video clip, was already on Aggro Announcement No. 3 . Nevertheless, the single was able to achieve good chart positions in the top 20. In the video of the same name, Tony D can be seen for the first time , he plays “the guy with the brass knuckles”.

mask

The title track of the album. Sido explains that he doesn't care what people think of him, his past and his mask . Furthermore, the song is supposed to depict Sido as a tough guy who sees "money, sex, violence and drugs" as the main themes of his life.

Mum is proud

The third single on the album, which was released in a normal and a limited punk rock version. Mama is proud is the most personal song on the album and deals with the topic that Sido's mother always stood behind him. Together with the band Brainless Wankers, Sido achieved third place for their state Berlin with the song at the Bundesvision Song Contest initiated by Stefan Raab .

Sido and the drugs

Sido and the Drugs is the only skit on the album and therefore not a song. It is the introduction to the following track Endlich Wochen Ende . Sido manages not to snap into his text on the ski, due to the use of drugs, until he is finally thrown out of the recording studio to "come down".

Last weekend

The most controversial song and the only reason Mask was indexed . Sido describes a weekend in his life when he and his "homies" Egon & Manfred get intoxicated by various drugs and then get into fights and the like. The title of Sido's biography "I want my song back" alludes to the indexing.

3 lives

Features: Tony D & Mesut. Sido raps, which runs like a red thread through the album, about his ghetto-like past. Mesut and today's Aggro member Tony D show their point of view and bring individual problems such as behavior in the group to the table.

Jail

The track begins with a phone call between Sido and the detainee MOK , who is a member of the sect . Sido raps about the dangers of getting into jail and recommends considering the consequences before a fight.

taxi

Feature: Olli Banjo . The track is about Sido robbing a bank and escaping with the help of an escape taxi run by Olli Banjo. On the way, the chase with the police is reported on the radio, and the rappers talk about their lives. According to a television interview with Sido, Taxi is the only song on the album that is not about Sido's life, but tells a fictional story.

Fuffies in the club

The second single from Mask . The rapper brags that he throws "thick bills" through clubs and that women find this attractive. The beat is based on the Mission: Impossible melody. The video was shot in a Berlin discotheque called Rush Hour . In addition to Sido, the video also shows the rappers Fler and Harris . Harris can also be heard in the remix alluded to in the clip. The video ends with Sido and Harris being arrested. The song was the inspiration for various disstracks , including Bushido and other songs that alluded to it, such as gynecologist hunnies in the club .

What has he?

Feature: Olli Banjo. Olli Banjo contributes the hookline to this song. Sido reports on the problem that groupies with whom he has sexual intercourse cannot separate from him. But he is only interested in the one-night stand and advises women to orientate themselves otherwise.

Glass high

Feature: Harris. In "Glas hoch" Sido and Harris appear for the first time as your favorite rappers . As mentioned in the track, the beat was produced by the Beathoavenz. It is a party song, the content of which is about performances on stage and the subsequent party.

The sect

Features: B-Tight , Tony D , Mesut, MOK , Fuhrmann and Bendt. With Die Sekt , Sido introduces his crew, some of whom are under contract with Aggro Berlin, others with Sidos and B-Tights label Sektenmuzik . Each member has one or two short stanzas.

Ghetto hole

This track deals with Sido's past in the Märkisches Viertel , his situation at the time the album was released and his future, from which Sido hopes to be even more successful.

Sido from the block

A short song whose beat is played by brass and alludes to the song Jenny from the Block by Jennifer Lopez . In terms of content, Sido says that despite his success, he remains the boy from the Berlin district of MV. Sido aus'm Block was already alluded to in the video clip for the single Mein Block .

Five different hip-hop producers were involved in the creation of Maske . The main producer is Roe Beardie, who is one of the founders of the Headrush Records label . He also produced the remix of the assfuck song , which can only be found on the censored X version. Another beat is from Bommer. He took over the production for the last piece Sido Aus'm Block . B-Tight also produced the song The Sect under his pseudonym Beatight . The track G mein Weg , only included on the X version, was produced by Paul NZA .

Cover

The cover was designed by Specter . It shows as a mixture of a skull and a Shure - microphone designed mask of the rapper. This is bedded on roses to address female fans according to Sido.

indexing

Cover of the album "Mask X"

The Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People subjected the album to an examination and decided to put it on the index . The decisive factor was the track Finally Weeks End on which - according to the Federal Inspectorate - the use of drugs is glorified. The label took the testing agency to court, claiming that the text in which the artist wanted to point out the dangers of taking drugs was a critical examination of drug use. In its judgment of February 17, 2006, the Cologne Administrative Court confirmed the interpretation of the Federal Inspectorate. The administrative court certified that Sido had an image as a drug user in the grounds of the judgment. The subject of drugs would be deliberately glorified and played down in the offending song.

As a reaction, in November 2005, Mask X appeared , which contained all the songs from the previous album, with the exception that Finally Weekend was missing and the assfuck song (Relax Mix) and G my way was replaced.
