The Diesterweg-Gymnasium is a high school in the Berlin district of Gesundbrunnen in the Mitte district . It bears the name of the German pedagogue Friedrich Adolph Wilhelm Diesterweg .

At the beginning of the 2011/12 school year, the school moved to a renovated building at Böttgerstrasse 2. Since then, it has been the first all-day high school and thus an all-day school in the Mitte district and is developing a profile in the artistic and sporting field. The all-day concept with the extensive range of working groups in the lunch band is continuously being expanded. The Diesterweg Gymnasium strives consistently to ensure that all migrant groups represented in the school community are treated equally. The school became known through the legal dispute over the establishment of a prayer room for Muslims .

history

The Diesterweg-Gymnasium emerged from two schools. One of the two schools was the 78th community school , which was recognized in 1895 as the 9th Realschule . In 1917 it was named Werner-von-Siemens-Realschule . In 1938 the school was renamed Gontard High School for Boys .

The second school is the 14th Realschule, founded in 1905 and recognized four years later . In 1920 it was named Diesterweg Realschule . Since the current name of the grammar school has its origin here, the year this school was founded, i.e. 1905, is also known as the year the Diesterweg grammar school was founded. It was also this school that paved the way for the grammar school, because in 1928 the expansion into an upper secondary school was approved, so that in 1931 the first Abitur with English as the first foreign language could be held.

During the Second World War, both school buildings were partially destroyed by bombs, so the school moved to alternative quarters in Osterode in the Harz Mountains, East Prussia and in what was then the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (now the Czech Republic).

After the war, the two schools were combined under the name Diesterweg-Gymnasium and moved into a building at Badstrasse 22 in the Wedding district . Ten years later, the school moved to a building on Böttgerstrasse in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen .

The no longer used building at Putbusser Straße 12

In 2001 the Ranke School was incorporated into the Diesterweg Gymnasium, after which the building, which was erected in the 1970s at Putbusser Straße 12 and which had previously only been used by the Ranke School, was moved into. The school building on Putbusser Straße was designed by the architects Pysall, Jensen and Stahrenberg & Partner . The bright red building with details accented in dark green is one of the structurally interesting architecture of post-war modernism.

Due to a decision in the Mitte district in 2007, the school moved back to its former location on Böttgerstrasse at the beginning of the 2011/12 school year, which was extensively renovated with funds from the federal government's economic stimulus program. This school building on the corner of Pankstrasse and Böttgerstrasse is an old building that was designed by Ludwig Hoffmann in 1904/1905 and previously housed a home economics school and then an upper school center. With the extensive renovation, the building was returned to its original purpose as a general school building and is an eye-catcher with the striking staircase tower on the corner of the property.

School profile

Intercultural profile with an artistic and sporting orientation

Billiards is also an offer in school sports

The 650 students at Diesterweg-Gymnasium come from 30 nations, all world religions are represented. That is why the school has anchored interculturality in its mission statement . Learning about cultures is an integral part of school work. Interdisciplinary teaching in project form takes place for all grades in every school year: The connecting topic always has a connection with interculturality.

The school has an intercultural profile with a special athletic and artistic orientation. In the artistic profile area, the school continuously distinguishes itself through projects. In the sporting profile area, the school not only takes part in competitions, but actively tries to educate young people in healthy sport. This also includes events with athletes who z. B. educate about doping. In the upper level, windsurfing , skiing and rowing can also be taken as special sports courses . The sporting profile also includes sports that are more unusual for school sports such as billiards . Trophies were won in the school billiards tournament.

Projects in the profile area art (selection)

An example of the artistic projects is the domino action from 2009. To mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Diesterweg-Gymnasium participated with an artistic design. The students of the art advanced course had the opportunity to paint a domino according to their wishes, which was brought down on November 9, 2009 in Berlin with hundreds of other dominoes.

Art projects in the field of fashion have been realized in cooperation with the Berlin housing association degewo . The activities were published under the title "wedding dress". In a two-month workshop, 14 students from the Diesterweg Gymnasium were introduced to the subject of fashion, production and trade as part of the art performance course, before the design phase then went on. The result is creative designs that deal with the topics of love, Berlin, music and peace. An example of a project with an artistic profile was the exhibition “Orange or the Fruits of Abraham” in 2010. This project dealt with the image cultures of the three monotheistic world religions Judaism , Christianity and Islam .

Since 2013, a special activity has continued the work in the art field: the additional graffiti course. In the upper level of the gymnasium, the additional graffiti wall painting course approved by the Berlin Senate Administration is offered as a component of the artistic profile of this school. In grade 11, students who are particularly interested in art can regularly choose the graffiti course as an additional course. In 2014, the school building facade was sprayed with a wall frieze over 100 m from this course. The pilot project was mentioned in the press and on the radio. In the summer of 2015 the group of students successfully completed the facade design and in November 2015 had the opportunity to present the project to the Committee for Cultural Affairs in the Berlin House of Representatives. The result of these artistic activities in the area of wall painting with graffiti technology was another commission in public space. The additional graffiti course at Diesterweg-Gymnasium designed a pedestrian tunnel in Berlin-Mitte in 2017, under Leipziger Str. This project is also mentioned in the press.

The cooperation with artists in "team teaching" shows up as a continuous principle of the artistic profile. In 2015, a mosaic project was also carried out together with an artist , which was specially designed for the 8th grade and was intended to support the ability to concentrate. With the participation in the "Open Monument Day 2015" an art-oriented cooperation project was initiated, the cooperation partner is the Mitte Museum.

Projects in the field of languages (selection)

In 2014 a school library was opened in the school's leisure area. Effective reading promotion can take place there, which is supposed to help the children of migrants. There is a wide variety of books available, either donated by the college or ordered from outside.

The Diesterweg-Gymnasium took part in the 14th competition of the State Association of Classical Philologists Berlin / Brandenburg in 2014/2015. This year, grades 5 to 9 were about to stage a lesson text in a short film . Two ninth grades and one eighth grade took part in this competition. An example of a short film theme would be the eruption of Mount Vesuvius . The Diesterweg-Gymnasium managed to win the first three prizes.

Course offer

The Diesterweg-Gymnasium comprises grades from 7 to 12. The intermediate grades, 7th to 10th grades, run in four sections, the upper grades take place in course phases . In the 10th school year, the MSA examination ( intermediate school leaving certificate ) takes place. Since the 2010 school year, lessons have been taking place in the “block system”, with 90 minutes of lessons each time without breaks. This results in longer learning phases than in the usual 45 minute class. In the 10th grade, special semester courses are offered to prepare for the upper school level. From the 2011/2012 school year, the Diesterweg-Gymnasium is an all-day school , binding up to and including grade 10 ( bound all-day school ). The school developed its own all-day concept with a long lunch break and a corresponding range of work groups. The school day covers the time from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., so that a rhythm is created from morning lessons, lunch band and afternoon lessons. Integrated into the lesson plans are student working hours in which homework is done or which can be used as practice hours before class work. As part of the language education concept, Latin foreign language classes support the development of language skills that contribute to mastering the language of instruction. Competitions in Latin were won, which were announced by the German Association of Classical Philologists . An integral part of the range of courses is interdisciplinary lessons, which are designed in a project-like manner every school year on a binding topic. The interdisciplinary lessons are based on the “Bergheim model”.

The school participates in the Berlin program for in-depth professional orientation (BvBO) and offers its students support in professional orientation and career choice.

  • English (compulsory subject from 7th grade)
  • Latin or French (elective subject from 7th grade)

Conveying values in everyday school life

The Diesterweg-Gymnasium faces the challenge of integrating the different cultures that the students bring with them from their countries of origin into a successful school community. The teachers receive regular further training and there are also events with students on cultural values. One example is an event with Ahmad Mansour (Program Director at the European Foundation for Democracy in Brussels and a qualified psychologist). As a former member of the German Islam Conference, he advises the school's teachers. "The teachers spoke about prevention in the area of radicalization in a training course and discussed other facets of the educational work in an advisory capacity. Mr. Mansour proved to be a very attentive listener who was able to explain precisely the situations that can lead to conflicts or misunderstandings in everyday teaching. " Part of the school history that expressed such a conflict is the dispute over a prayer room that was legally fought.

In 2007, a Muslim student offered his midday prayer in the hallway. With reference to the principle of neutrality, the school management forbade him to do so. The student sued the school management's decision in 2008. The Berlin Administrative Court ruled in the first instance that he was allowed to pray at school at noon. Because of the fundamental importance of the case, an appeal was allowed, which the State of Berlin then also lodged with the Higher Administrative Court of Berlin-Brandenburg . In 2010 the complaint was upheld and in this specific case Muslim prayer was banned because of endangering the peace of the school . The case caused a sensation nationally and internationally.

A prayer room was made available to Muslim students by the school until prayer was forbidden by law. The Federal Administrative Court confirmed the prohibition of prayer in a case-by-case decision insofar as the prayers disrupt the school peace and the regular school routine.

“Contrary to what many suspect, schools are not religion-free areas, even according to the OVG judges. The restriction is justified, however, because a "very concrete danger" for the school peace is to be encountered. ”Thus, students came under considerable pressure to take part in the prayers against their will.

The Federal Administrative Court ruled on November 30, 2011: The performance of prayers in the school finds its barrier in the maintenance of school peace . A pupil is not entitled to say a prayer while attending school outside of class if this is specifically likely to disturb the peace at school. "The Federal Administrative Court decided ... for the plaintiff's specific case that, due to the circumstances at the school he attended, performing prayer in the school hallway could increase an already existing danger to school peace. This means that there is no conflict and - This means coping that enables the proper course of lessons in the interest of realizing the state's educational mandate. The school peace can be impaired if a religiously motivated behavior of a student causes or exacerbates religious conflicts in school. "

This legal dispute is part of school history and has been largely dealt with. The Diesterweg-Gymnasium as a learning school continues the path of dealing with interculturality and learning from experts in this field. A study day took place in 2015. Well-known experts were available to the school's teachers, e. B. the lawyer and author Seyran Ates , the social scientist and publicist Dr. Necla Kelek , the psychologist and sociologist Kazim Erdogan and the educator Sanem Kleff . The school community was encouraged by the experts to continue to treat all students with their different worldviews equally.

Social work

Since the redesign as an all-day high school, the school has been cooperating with the Society for Sport and Youth Social Work. The teaching and educational work is supported by four educators and social workers. A mediator for intercultural communication is permanently employed at the high school.

Support association

The school association of the Ranke-Gymnasium, founded in 1994, has been called “Friends of Diesterweg - and Ranke - Gymnasium e. V. “The aims of the friends' association are to support and promote school activities, such as class trips, and to maintain contacts with students, parents and teachers beyond school days. An Oktoberfest has been held every year since 2009, where former students and teachers come together.

Student parliament

In addition to the student council (SV), there is a student parliament in the Diesterweg-Gymnasium . The SV supports it by organizing various elections and discussions on various topics. The Diesterweg-Gymnasium thus follows the recommendations of the German Society for Democratic Education. This is intended to enable the students to participate in school life to a large extent and to enable democratic school development that is supported by the entire community.
