Dawn Richard (* 5. August 1983 ) is an American R & B - singer and songwriter . After a first debut album in 2005, she served from 2006 until 2009 Member of the girl group Danity Kane and 2009-2012 part of the hip-hop - group Diddy-Dirty Money , in 2013 she released her second solo album called "Gold Heart".

Richard was born in 1983 in New Orleans, Louisiana , the daughter of an African American and a Haitian . She has a brother. Her family lives in Baltimore, Maryland after they had to leave their home because of Hurricane Katrina . Her father, Frank Richard, is the lead singer and percussionist of the successful funk / soul band Chocolate Milk. Her mother owned a dance school , where Dawn spent much of her childhood.

Richard signed her first record deal at the age of 20 with the indie label Yeah! Brother Records in 2004. 2005, followed a year later under the artist name “Dawn Angelique”, the first studio album called “Been A While”. The CD contained collaborations with B'Shipe and Pooh Bear, among others.

The big breakthrough followed in the same year as part of the casting show Making The Band , in which she emerged as the winner and became a member of the pop and R&B group Danity Kane. The name of the girl band is based on a cartoon character from Richard. The band had two number one albums and as many top ten hits by 2008. They are the only girl group that managed to reach number one on the Billboard 200 charts with their first two albums . In Germany her biggest hit “Show Stopper” reached the top 40 of the charts. During her time with Danity Kane, Richard's solo songs appeared on the internet, among others in collaboration with Lil Wayne , Trina and Flo Rida . Richard also performed the parts of Keyshia Cole on live performances of the song “Last Night” from P. Diddy's album “Press Play” .

In 2009, after Danity Kane broke up, she joined Sean Combs ' new formation Diddy-Dirty Money . The trio consisting of rapper, producer and founder Sean "Diddy" Combs and the singers Kalenna Harper and Richard (both acting together as "Dirty Money") released a top 10 album in 2011 with Last Train to Paris and the single "Coming Home ”together with Skylar Gray was able to climb number four in the German single charts . The song I'm On You together with DJ Antoine and Timati reached number 50 in the German singles charts in spring 2012. In addition to the studio album, the mixtape “Love Love vs. Hate Love ”. After the project broke up after three years, Richard also ended her contract with Bad Boy Records , which she signed with Combs in 2006, to continue independently as a solo artist. Her first EP "Amor On" was released in March 2012 as a self-distributed download and reached number 145 on the official US album charts and number 28 on the R&B album charts. At the end of the same year, the Christmas EP "Whiteout" was released. The extended play contained the single "December Sky". In January 2013 followed with “Goldenheart” the first studio album under the name “Dawn Richard”. Richard has also made guest appearances on albums and mixtapes by Lil 'Mo , Chris Brown , Nelly , Guy Gerber , Eve and T-Pain .
