From the inside out is the second album by the Minden rapper Curse and was released on October 1, 2001 via Jive Records . It is still one of the musician's most popular and successful records to this day.

Concept and production

From the inside out is commonly interpreted as a further development of the subject complexes of its predecessor, firewater . The Juice Magazine described the content- related focus from inside to outside with "[...] thoughts about interpersonal relationships, social [n] events [n] and hip hop [...]". Compared to his debut, the texts largely deal with similar, albeit more in-depth approaches to the artist persona Curse created by Michael Kurth , which he himself explains as a product of his living conditions at the time and with the experience of a two-month trip through Singapore , New Zealand and Tonga .

“After the album release [from Feuerwasser] came the tour and countless appearances followed [...]. I got to know a lot of people, saw a lot of things, got a lot of impressions - positive and negative - in short: I got a lot of input. A lot has happened in my personal life too. It was a turbulent time that shaped me in many ways. [...] So I decided to go on the trip. I needed distance, I was overloaded with everything. "

- Curse in an interview, October 2001

Curse had already dealt with love relationships with women on Feuerwasser through songs such as love-hate or light and shadow , which is also dealt with in more intense form on From Inside Out in songs like Let's be friends , Trust or Much easier . Accents critical of social and hip-hop were also continued on this album.

In addition to the extremely personal component in Curse's poetry , which was already known at the time, it is noteworthy that his subjects were expanded to include irony . So with the tracks Why not , I don't rap anymore and above all, Fuck Curse, an unusually large number of obviously ironic songs were released on a Curse record. This is generally to be interpreted as a reaction to the perception of the public at the time, which Curse often accuses of "extreme seriousness" even today and calls him an "expert on relationship issues".

The musical accompaniment of producer Sascha "Busy" Bühren, Treyer / Seven, Roey Marquis II. , Hawkeye , Jaleel , Stieber Twins, DJ feedback and peer Bee oriented itself again in his with drum machines programmed sample -Aesthetics, as with firewater , on Style of East Coast hip-hop , but far more melody-oriented than before.

With a large number of other guest musicians such as the rappers Kool Savas , Tone, Azad , Germany and above all the singers Samir, Youdon and Xavier Naidoo , more singing can be heard on the record compared to its predecessor. A circumstance that plays an increasingly important role in Curse's musical development on his later albums.

Singles

Single releases were Let's be friends / Think of me and why not? ( as EP ) for which video clips were shot. It should also be emphasized that on the occasion of the then burgeoning debate about the legal position of music exchanges (especially the then market leader Napster ), Curse unusually did not make a short video for his Interlude So either .

Reviews

The Juice Magazine from October 2001 gave five out of six crowns from the inside out , the second highest rating of the editors. The majority of the critics saw in this work "[...] a very good record that should not be missing in the German-speaking hip-hop households." The comparison with the American rapper Common , which is often quoted today , was clearly displayed here for the first time. Both the Juice-editors spoke with Inside Out of of "[...] memories of the last [2001] album of Common [...]" and the critics laut.de discovered a similarity to "Emcee Common [sic]" . This is also based on the thematic, yet true to concept, versatility of the long player as a "[...] manifesto for a rap record that would be at your side in the various moods [...]". For critics and fans, Von Innen nach Aussen is regarded as a record that "[...] has set new standards in the genre of 'German HipHop' [...]" and is one of the most popular albums in his discography for many of his listeners and, according to Curse, according to himself.
