chronology
- Firewater Inside Out
(2001)

Feuerwasser is the first album by the Minden rapper Curse and was released on March 27, 2000 via Jive Records . Received differently by critics and fans, since the album was stylistically very different from the musical approaches of the German hip-hop hubs in Hamburg and Stuttgart at the time , Feuerwasser is now widely seen as groundbreaking for the development of German hip-hop.

Although the comparatively low commercial success compared to other hip-hop artists of the time, Curse's first single , which made it into the video rotation of some music stations , is on the album with love-hate / ten rap laws .

Concept and production

The lyrics are about interpersonal relationships, self-reflection and depression . There are also representative and battle tracks . Of the Juice magazine album is described as a blend of "naive and sophistication, emotion and Technology, juvenile Feierlaune and astonishing Ernst". The album is designed as a classic rap record and, according to Curse and Bührens, was based primarily on Nas' debut album, Illmatic .

On the musical side, the producers Lord Scan, Stieber Twins, Sascha “Busy” Bühren, Iman, DJ Feedback and Peer Bee work mainly with styles and elements of East Coast hip-hop from the mid and late 90s. This sound aesthetic is primarily characterized by the programming of samples (often from the field of jazz ) using corresponding analog workstations and drum computers such as the MPC 2000 or the SP1200 from E-mu Systems .

Chart placement

Firewater rose to number 31 on the media control charts in the first week. In the second week, the album slipped to 46th place. It was in the top 100 for a total of six weeks, the last time in the 20th calendar week of 2000 at number 89. It is thus the album with the lowest entry position to date and the shortest stay in the charts in Curse's discography of regular studio albums .

Reviews

The critics had different opinions about firewater , partly due to Curse's artistic approach. At the time, it was very different from the conventions and concepts of the German hip-hop epicentres Hamburg and Stuttgart at the time . Nevertheless, Curse had generated corresponding expectations within the hip-hop scene through previous projects, which were very high in many places.

In the year of publication, Juice Magazine saw Feuerwasser as one of "the best German hip-hop albums" and made it its album of the month. Later, in the review section of a special issue , the magazine Feuerwasser included it in the “Selection of the most relevant German rap albums in the young hip-hop history [...]”. The album is "[...] morality, integrity and honor [...]". attributed.

Laut.de rated the album as mediocre on the grounds that the stylistic direction of the album was "a bit too hard and [...] sometimes too personal". The intro attests to Curse's lack of content. When she re-released Feuerwasser in 2003, however, she revised this opinion and spoke of "[...] one of the best rap albums of the year [2003]."

Overall, Feuerwasser met with positive feedback for the most part, but has remained far less popular with fans than, for example, its successors From Inside Out or Freedom
