Freedom is the fifth album by the Minden rapper Curse . It was released on September 26, 2008 on the sub-label Alles Real Records , which he co-founded . Freedom was mostly well received by critics and fans. It is one of Curse's most commercially successful albums and the first to enter the music charts in three countries. With Until the end , his first single , which was placed in the top 10 of the German single charts and reached the mainstream , is also on the album.

Emergence

Curse at an appearance, 2009

Shortly after the release of Sinnflut in December 2005, Curse began to write lyrics again and in the summer of 2006 had already recorded enough material with twelve songs to be able to publish a new album. However, he abandoned the initial plan of releasing them in August or September of the same year because he lacked the emotional connection to the songs and a concept. After a rethink, the first work on Freiheit began in December 2006. Curse invited the producers SaschliQ, Claud and Nicolay to a session for two weeks , with whom he designed the album. During this session, for example, The Long Way to ... and 100 Years . Was added freedom then in Cologne studio by Patrice Bart-Williams , who there at the same time on his album Free-Patri-Ation worked, and partly also in French Antibes . For the recordings and production, Curse mainly used analog technology , which is known for its warm sound; the microphone with which he recorded the pieces dates from 1947. The first mixing work began in November 2007, but Curse was not satisfied with the preliminary results; Only in February 2008 the work with a new song constellation as well as new ideas and further available guest singers was continued and completed in September.

The album's title was officially Curse February 1, 2008 on its website announced that Cover - Design followed on July 25, the title list on 28 August. The release date of the album and the first single Freiheit , announced on July 31, was postponed by one week on August 21.

Concept and content

The album, especially its theme song, is based on Curse's views of what freedom is and what isn't. He also presented this in several interviews, but emphasized that Freedom is not a concept album .

“The album is called 'Freedom' because it's about freedom in the heart. The album was created with exactly this feeling - as start, path and goal. For me, 'freedom' means releasing constraints, dissolving boundaries and shedding restrictive expectations. Music and art as such should never arise out of fear and with barriers, but always out of the deep need to want to break through barriers and walls. 'Freedom' means having the courage to let go and move away from safe ground in order to find new ground. 'Freedom' also means doing what you feel is right for yourself, even if the people around us expect or want something different. The album is called 'Freedom' because the ultimate goal is to be musically and lyrically free. This is the only way to move forward on your path, instead of just copying yourself in well-worn streets. "

- Curse : on his homepage

In songs like Schöne Truth , I Can't No More , Lila and Until the End, Curse raps about the inability of some people to make the right decisions for them and to control their own fate . Other pieces ( Imagine , Just a Very Little Bit , Fantastic and Welcome Back ) are about what you are able to achieve - such as personal freedom, which equates to bliss - when you determine your own life and believes in his dreams.

The long way to ... (also: The long way to freedom ) is the only song about freedom that does not have its own concept. For Curse it is more of a “ brainstorming ” based on “thoughts and situations”.

The song Freiheit defines the word of the same name and represents the concept of the album ( "Freedom means [...] to fulfill oneself rather than the expectations of other people" ).

In the song Imagine , Curse describes the idea of a different, better life with which he wants to shake people up to change his life instead of being satisfied with his own dissatisfaction. The repetitive line “It can happen” in the refrain should give the incentive to actively reshape one's unsatisfactory life .

According to Curse, Schöne Truth is "very introverted" and "perhaps the most personal song on the album". He raps about self-doubt about his actions and plans ( doubt was the working title of the piece) and the fear of expectations and responsibility for his own fate.

Curse's striving for the realization of a dream, in which he wants understanding and support from the person addressed, is just a little bit described. He deliberately leaves it open whether his counterpart is a girlfriend, his record company or the hip-hop genre.

The idea of gold is based on the saying “All that glitters is not gold.” Curse develops this further in humorous and cynical ambiguities ( “Not everyone who eats their mouths is connoisseur / And not every Mona smiles like Lisa ”) ). In the chorus he demands more success for himself and a gold record for freedom .

In the song 100 Years (also: Hundred Years ), Curse deals with the life of his grandparents and their generation using two verses that describe their experiences during the bombing of Dresden and the captivity after the Second World War . In two further stanzas he deals with the present life of this generation. The chorus of the piece is an adaptation of Reinhold Niebuhr's serenity prayer .

“God, give us grace to accept with serenity
The things that cannot be changed
Courage to change the things
Which should be changed
And the Wisdom to distinguish
The one from the other. "

The Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr

"God, please give us the strength
to change what we can
and accept
that some things are just as they are.
Please give us the wisdom
so that they can see what the difference is."

100 years of Curse

I can no longer reflect on specific situations from Curse's circle of friends in which people ignore things that are done to them and make the same mistake again. "The bottom line of the song is: I can't do more than tell you what I'm thinking, but you have to decide for yourself whether you hear what I'm saying."

With Baby, Curse addresses his unborn child and deals with the possibilities that could rob them of the chance to get to know each other in the future. He sees the song as a " preemptive strike " by telling his child that no matter what the circumstances, he will always love it.

Celebrate yourself , according to Curse, is an alternative to the many offensive battle rap pieces by other rappers by rapping that you should always "celebrate" yourself, no matter how you look or what kind of life you lead, because in the evenings After all, the light of the stroboscope would make all people look the same.

The piece purple is based on the one hand on the story of the main character of the film The Color Purple , who despite the given possibilities for years does not manage to change her living conditions for the better. On the other hand, the content of the song can be traced back to a story that Curse heard in Sri Lanka : The elephants there are chained from birth to prevent them from running away. Over time they get used to this situation, while the chaining measures are continuously reduced. After all, the elephants are only tied to a string and have the opportunity to flee, but do not do so even in dangerous situations due to their conditioning . This background serves as a parable for the story of the piece. In Lila is about a youth who is soon pregnant. Abandoned by her boyfriend and left on her own with her family, she can no longer cope with her life and finally sees her only way out in killing her children , whereupon she is admitted to psychiatry . Curse sees this conditioning for a deadlocked life as a possible answer to the cases of infanticide of young parents, which are frequently present in the media . The color purple , a melancholy color for Curse , runs through the piece as a leitmotif . Lila is "definitely the heaviest song on the album".

If I could create the world out of you, metaphorically treats “ creation based on the attributes of a woman” ( “Would take your back / To support any mountain / As an atmosphere your warmth / To protect people” ). The lyrics are lyrically inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

In Until the End , Curse deals with a relationship that has been doomed to fail due to irreconcilable differences, but which neither partner is willing to give up, since neither of them wants to face the consequences.

With Fantastisch , Curse wants to convey the feeling of "being detached and feeling good" as well as "seeing the beautiful things in life, but also having the bad things in view".

You say / you mean describes in a humorous way the difference between what a man and woman say in a relationship and what they actually mean.

Welcome back deals with the fates of three people who “lost their lives” but were given a second chance to steer it on the right track. The first stanza is about a man who wakes up in the hospital and reconstructs the car accident that brought him there. He gets to hear "welcome back" from the doctor who apparently saved him. The second stanza deals with a pregnant woman who loses her child and thereby her will to live. Later, however, she learns from her doctor that “new life is emerging in her”. In the third verse, Curse reports on a former soldier who went to war to “take distance from life” . Back at home, however, he realizes that the life from which he fled is meanwhile the greatest happiness for him.

Freedom (epilogue) supplements the statements on the song Freiheit in two further stanzas.

style

In terms of content and music, Freiheit is more positive than Curse's previous albums, often described as "melancholy" or "depressive". Most of the pieces were recorded live, only a few samples can be heard, for example in Freiheit and Gold . Particularly great accents are on brass and strings . In spite of the fact that the instruments are mainly used individually, they usually sound very orchestral . Lillo Scrimali , who has already worked with Max Herre , Joy Denalane and the Fantastischen Vier , could be won as arranger . The arrangements are very untypical for the hip-hop genre in their musicality and complexity , but most of the songs contain strongly accentuated break and synthetic beats instead of drum rhythms . This connection becomes clear about If I could create the world from you . Curse names it as one of his favorite songs on the album, as it clearly shows the typical for the album the boundaries of hip-hop, but still rooted in it musical direction. He also exemplifies the poetic , lyrically challenging element of his texts. Curse wants to move even more in this direction in the future.

The musical style of Freiheit has often been viewed by reviewers as a fusion of hip-hop and pop music , and Curse himself calls it an "extension of rap ". He emphasizes, however, that freedom is still a hip-hop album, as this designation does not depend on the sound of the album, but on the attitude of the artist. In addition to the sounds typical of hip-hop and pop music, there are also clear borrowings from other music genres in individual titles: the instrumentation in Celebration yourself can be assigned to dub , especially towards the end of the piece ; sounds from jazz were integrated into the piece Lila . The background music as well as the choir songs in the song 100 Years come from gospel .

occupation

Singer

Curse worked with a number of singers and rappers during the creation process of Freiheit .

“I chose all the guests on the album because of their musical and human closeness. Often you will find overlaps and similarities where you least expect them - if you are open and allow it. ”
- Curse on his homepage

On the album, however, there is no other rapper to be heard besides Curse, since his conceptual idea was more likely to be shared by vocalists at the time when freedom was created. These take up a much larger space on the album than on the previous ones. Curse worked closely with Clueso and Patrice in particular during the creation. With Clueso he recorded two songs, of which I can no longer end up on the album. Patrice, already represented on Sinnflut , also worked with Curse on two titles, one of which is Celebration Yourself on Freedom . The collaboration with Xavier Naidoo on Imagine is the third after Soul Music (2001) and When I Have Children (2002). According to Curse, the collaborations between the two always produced “songs that stand for something” and expressed an “attitude”. Chima got to know Curse through his collaboration and friendship with Patrice and the violinist and producer MIKI; he sings the refrain of the song Schöne Truth . The Dutchwoman Jenny Willemstijn (now Jenny Lane) was involved with her singing on Nur a little bit . Shortly before the end of the production, Curse became aware of them through an appearance by the singer, which she had uploaded to the video portal YouTube . Nneka met Curse through one of the producers of the album DJ Farhot. When they first met, they spontaneously recorded the song Baby ; In addition, their backing vocals can be heard on Just a Little Bit . With the Philadelphia- born Jaguar Wright , Curse recorded three songs during her stay in Cologne, two of which, Lila and Willkommen zurück , are represented on Freiheit . Vanessa Mason, member of the Farin Urlaub Racing Team , has already worked with Curse on internal security and deluge . It's in the chorus of you say / you mean to hear. On the opening track The long road to ... also the singer appears Larissa Sirah .

During this time, Curse also recorded songs with rappers like FR , Casper , M-Riebold , Olli Banjo , Kool Savas and Tone . Except for Tone, they can all be heard on songs from the MZEE.com edition of the album.

It is mainly in the colors white , black and gold , with the light component predominating with white. On the left of the cover you can read the rapper's lettering in golden letters and below that of the album. In the central position, Curse can be seen looking down in the American shot . He wears an open white shirt with black pants; On the gold T-shirt you can see the detail of a panorama picture of a beach where Curse is walking. Dieter Eikelpoth and Ruediger Glatz were involved in the photography of the cover.

promotion

Curse was during the marketing of freedom present in radio and television. He stepped around the MTV telecast Total Request Live and was on Kiss FM to hear. Between October 1st and 3rd, 2008, the so-called “Freedom Mobile” was on the road in Dortmund , Cologne and Berlin . Curse's street team distributed flyers and stickers to promote the album . From October 4th, Curse moderated a weekly program on the music channel YAVIDO for four weeks , in which he also reported on freedom . In addition, freedom was advertised on the TV station ProSieben and in the magazine Juice .

reception

successes

In the first week, Freiheit entered the German album charts at number twelve . In the second week, the album slipped to 42nd place. In total, it was represented in the Top 100 for 11 weeks, the last time in the sixth week of 2009. In addition to From Inside To Outside (2001) and Inner Security (2003), whose highest ranking was 9 and 12 respectively, it is one of the most successful albums of the Rappers in Germany .

The chart entry in Switzerland was at number 29, Curse 'most successful solo position in this country to date. In addition, he was able to place himself in the Austrian charts for the first time with freedom , where the album was number 57.

Reviews

The criticisms of freedom represented a uniformly positive consensus , but it received comparatively little attention in Germany. With a few exceptions, it was not taken into account internationally in the rest of the German-speaking countries. The evaluation of the album can be exemplified by individual statements: The web portal CDSTARTS.de described the work as one of the “best German hip-hop / rap albums of the year [2008]”, while the youth community Jetzt.de Freiheit as “pleasantly effortless "fresh and free".

The hip-hop magazine Juice gave it almost the highest rating with 5.5 out of six “crowns” and voted it “album of the month”. She went there on the musical development of the hip-hop scene since Curse 'second album Inside Out , and concluded that stretching from the years the hip hop mainstream dominant Aggro Berlin delimiting sound stage production to the current "sound picture" correspond. Freedom has its roots in hip-hop, but also dares to go beyond its limits, for example through “courage to be pathos ”. The critic also praised the “sophisticated compositions” of the pieces as well as the issues raised, which moved outside of the “scene behavior” and showed that Curse is not resting “on his indisputable technical abilities”. The favorites of the Juice editorial team were the songs Imagine , Lila and Until the end . Imagine being described as "great art", while purple was "atmospheric and intensely staged". Up to the end it was described as “very big stadium pop , which even Kanye West couldn't have done better”, and the text was “German-language pop poetry of the highest order”. The review ends with the conclusion:

“Curse [uses] his experience to present a draft of German rap music that is likely to meet with approval even beyond a steadily shrinking hip-hop core audience. Or, in other words: 'Freiheit' is the most interesting and courageous album that a German rapper has released in years. "

The critic of the e-zine laut.de was particularly enthusiastic about the “epic” epilogue of the play Freiheit and praised the rapper's vocabulary and imagination “once more” , as well as “the overabundance of life, love and suffering stories that Curse keeps ready and puts it in razor-sharp words ”. The tracks on which guest singers are represented, primarily the "melancholy tinged" and "haunting" song I can no longer with Clueso , were particularly highlighted . The expectations of Curse were once again "fully met", which is why the album received four out of five possible points.

From rap.de, Freiheit almost got the highest possible rating, based mainly on four “outstanding” pieces: Baby , Until the end , I can't anymore and If I could create the world out of you . The latter is said to be typical of Curse. “Musically and in terms of content”, freedom is “wonderful” and at a “high level”, but large parts of the album are “simply dispensable”, which the critic attributes to the excessive use of sung refrains. In addition, the album is almost too harmonious.

“You have to like curse itself, you have to like melodic and border-crossing rap music, you have to like singing hooks. But then [...] "Freedom" is a great piece of music. "

Evaluation by other artists

Freedom also received attention within the hip-hop scene, but hardly beyond that. The rapper Maxim, a member of the hip-hop group KIZ , was critical of the title of Curse's album in an interview:

"[Curse] called the [album]" Freedom ". But if he were really free he would have called his album "Tomato Salad". Because only that proves ultimate freedom. "

In a detailed review, the rapper Morlockk praised Dilemma Freiheit . He was "very enthusiastic about the productions", the album was "musically designed grandiose". The songs of freedom , gold and purple , he emphasized and testified Lila to have "liked to write itself." However, Morlockk Dilemma expressed himself negatively about the consciously positive approach to freedom that does not reflect real life. He would have preferred "a little more dirt in the choice of topic" and a more explicit exposure of the "abysses in our society", similar to the one in purple . Because of this decision, he gave Curse no sales opportunities with members of the lower class .

The album's first single , Freiheit , was released two weeks before the album of the same name and landed at number 38 on the Media Control Charts. It is based on a sample of the live recording of the song of the same name by Marius Müller-Westernhagen . Since Curse did not expect to receive approval for the sample, he initially rejected the idea for the song, but was later convinced by both his manager Götz Gottschalk and Patrice to send the demo version to Müller-Westernhagen. He was enthusiastic about Curse's interpretation, especially in terms of content. He then made the master tapes of the original available to Curse , re-sang his sampled verse, and appeared in the music video of the piece. The video on freedom was shot by Ken Duken in Berlin, partly in the empty Olympic Stadium . Curse played the song live for the first time on the Day of German Unity at the Brandenburg Gate . The last song on the Premium Edition of the album is an epilogue to freedom . Musically it is largely identical, but contains two additional stanzas by Curse.

The second single Until the End was released on November 14, 2008. It rose to number 7 in the German charts and stayed in the top ten for two months , making it Curse's most successful single to date. The song was co-written and arranged by Silbermond, co-produced by her guitarist Thomas Stolle and sung by front woman Stefanie Kloß. The accompanying video was shot in Venice by Daniel Siegler . On the day of the release, Curse and Silbermond presented the song on VIVA Live! in front. On December 5, 2008, they performed with Until the End at the 48th edition of The Dome .

On April 17, 2009, the third single, If I could create the world out of you, was released in a version inspired and re- arranged by Curse 'live concerts , in which the singer Mariama and the singer Samir can be heard. Ken Duken was again responsible as the director of the music video. The song received little attention and, with a chart entry at number 82, could not build on the success of Bis zur Ende.

Playlists

All three singles on the album have so-called B-sides . A total of three of them are completely new pieces that were created during the work on Freiheit , but were not used on the album. The title I don't understand (band version) was re-recorded by a music band, as was the single version of If I could create the world out of you . The original version of the piece can be found on the album Innere Sicherheit .

tour

FR performed at two concerts of the Freedom Tour.

The concert tour following the release of the album was split into two separate tours: On the Freedom Tour 2008 , Curse gave seven concerts in Germany in November 2008. He played the concert in Berlin with Stefanie Kloß and FR as guests. For the greater freedom tour 2009 , appearances were originally planned in February and March 2009, extended to Austria and Switzerland. The success of the single delayed this until the end , so the tour did not take place until May 2009. As the festival season began shortly afterwards , during which Curse performed at the Breminale and the Splash! Festival , among other things , the tour was also significantly shorter than planned with eight dates. At the concert in Frankfurt, FR appeared again as support .

Curse played all tour dates with a full live band.

Freedom cookbook

Along with Curse published Christoph Brand, a member of the Austrian agency " flying chefs ", January 22, 2009 The Freedom cookbook that one for each of the fourteen tracks on the album Court of Cook contains. On April 2, 2009, some of the recipes were cooked in front of guests in Kassel as part of a live event.
