biography

Beginnings

Max Herre grew up in his native city of Stuttgart. He made his first experiences with (American) hip-hop at school. After listening to Advanced Chemistry , he decided to do hip-hop in German himself. He founded his first band Seedless Jam at the age of 15, his first hip-hop project Agit Jazz four years later with the instrumental music producer Philippe A. Kayser (Don Philippe). In order to be able to perform their pieces live, they formed the band Maximilian and his circle of friends in 1993 together with the Stuttgart producer DJ Friction (Martin Welzer) . In the same year Max founded the kolkhoz together with other Stuttgart artists .

circle of friends

After the three friends had signed Die Fantastischen Vier with the newly founded label Four Music of the German rap pioneers in 1997 , they achieved their musical and commercial breakthrough with ANNA ; the song sold over 250,000 times. The band's debut album, renamed Freundeskreis , was titled Squaring the Circle and sold 170,000 times.

The 1999 second album Esperanto sold over 300,000 copies. In the same year the double live album En Directo by FK Allstars was recorded. It contains recordings of four concerts that took place in December 1999, including pieces by the Freundeskreis as well as reinterpretations by the all-stars.

After the Freundeskreis had given its last concerts for the time being in 2000, the band returned to various festivals in 2007, including in Stuttgart, the band's hometown, where they celebrated their 10th anniversary at the MTV HipHop Open festival.

FK all stars

Max Herre developed the concept of the FK-Allstars, an association of more than 15 artists, including Gentleman , Afrob , Sékou , Joy Denalane and Brooke Russell. In 2000 they played at some of the biggest festivals in Central Europe like Rock im Park , Rock am Ring or the Splash in front of up to 70,000 visitors. After the tour he left the band as an active member.

producer

Under the increasing pressure from his growing celebrities, Herre largely withdrew from the public hype and after the birth of his first son mainly took care of the production of his wife's debut album, Joy Denalane. In 2002 Mamani was done. The top 10 album sold 130,000 times and was nominated three times for the Echo .

Solo career

Be published almost five years after the last studio album of friends-Max Herre in September 2004, named after his own solo album, Max Herre , where he mixed a variety of genres together. With this concept album, Herre showed his great openness and his musical range. He combined soul and reggae , but also rock elements were incorporated. Herre's debut album was very successful commercially. In April 2006, Herre, Joy Denalane, Götz Gottschalk and Sophie Raml founded a new label called Nesola .

On August 11, 2006, the second Denalane album Born & Raised, produced by Herre, was released on Four Music.

On August 24, 2012 he released his third album Hallo Welt! . Before that, the freetrack Every Day with Antonino from Mega was too much ! Mega! and the single Wolke 7 , a duet with Philipp Poisel , was released. This was able to establish itself up to number six in the German single charts . It is Max Herre's first top 10 hit . While recording a broadcast by Roche & Böhmermann , Herre left the talk show after criticism from the presenter Charlotte Roche , but was brought back by the presenter so that the broadcast could be continued.

In 2013, Max Herre worked as a coach on the third season of the casting show The Voice of Germany of the ProSiebenSat.1 network . His protégé Andreas Kümmert won the show.

As the third German hip-hop act after the Fantastischen Vier and Sido , Max Herre released an album from the MTV Unplugged series called MTV Unplugged Kahedi Radio Show . In addition to current songs, the track list also included songs from his former band Freundeskreis . For the album, he received the award as Hip-Hop Artist of the Year at the 2014 Echo Awards. 14 days after the release (December 13, 2013), MTV Unplugged received a gold award and a few weeks later a platinum award.

On November 8, 2019, his fourth album Athen was released after a seven-year break .

Private

In search of a singer for the single Mit Dir , Herre met Joy Denalane in 1999 , whom he later married. Herre's first son was born in 2001. In 2002, during the production of his wife's album, Herre moved to Berlin for family and career . In 2003 his second son was born. The couple split in February 2007, but have been dating again since 2011. Max Herre is also the father of a daughter born in 2008, to whom he dedicated the song Vida from his album Hallo Welt!

Max Herre is the grandson of Richard Herre , a well-known architect, designer, graphic artist and translator at the time. In the context of the exhibition "Richard Herre / Architect, Designer, Graphic Artist, Translator - 1885–1959" Max Herre was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board.

Influences

Max Herre's influences include artists like Jay-Z , but also Black Thought , Bob Marley's Natty Dread on Al Green's Let's Stay Together , the English 70s rock band Free , Ostbeat musicians like Hansi Biebl and the singer-songwriter Nick Drake . Musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin are among them as well as Udo Lindenberg , who is probably his strongest influence.

Herre describes himself as "a big fan" of the music in the GDR "of the late 60s and 70s". "There was this Amiga label. There were an incredible number of good bands. I have the feeling that the music, the bands, the recording technology, it was all more developed in the East than in the West."
