The website Laut.de awarded 4 out of 5 stars. Simon Langemann wrote that Herre delivered “a manifesto of musical freedom and open mindedness”, “which is unparalleled in the German-speaking music landscape”. Musically, he remained true to himself, "by breaking new musical paths and polarizing at the highest level a year before his 40th birthday". Florian Schneider from Tonspion.de concluded: "This leaves a damn good and a bit too cleverly produced" Back To The Roots "album with two unnecessary cover versions that Herre would have better saved for the next tour." He gave 4 out of 6 stars. In the show Roche & Böhmermann on September 8, 2012, Charlotte Roche criticized the album in the presence of Max Herre, compared the songs with hit songs and said that they were even worse than at the beginning of Herre's career. Various media then reported that Herre had left the studio at short notice because of this. Roche followed and got him back.

In 2013 the album was awarded a gold record .
