Gaston Patrice Babatunde Bart-Williams (* 9. July 1979 in Cologne ) is a German reggae - singer and songwriter . He even prefers the African name Babatunde to his real name . He uses Patrice as his stage name .

Private life

Bart-Williams is the son of Gaston Bart-Williams , a writer from Sierra Leone , and a German. He got his second African name Babatunde because he was born on the day his grandfather died. Babatunde means something like "the rebirth of our beloved father". Bart-Williams was viewed by his parents as the reincarnation of their grandfather. His European name Patrice is inspired by the Congolese freedom hero Patrice Lumumba .

He grew up in Kerpen-Brüggen near Cologne. His father died in a ferry accident when Patrice was eleven years old. Gaston Bart-Williams was working on a three-part documentary about Africa: African Roots (ZDF). Bart-Williams received a scholarship for the Schloss Salem boarding school on Lake Constance. As a “rebellious lone fighter” he had to leave the boarding school, but was allowed to return after two years and passed his Abitur there in 1999 . The music helped him through the worst of times. Patrice lives in New York, Cologne and Paris.

music

Patrice makes reggae music and sometimes sings on patois , although his music also contains jazz , soul , funk and hip-hop elements.

This diverse mix is mainly due to his socialization in the Cologne hip-hop scene. There he had the opportunity to try out a wide variety of art forms. “I grew up with hip-hop and used to try everything. Music, graffiti, freestyle, dancing, djing and skateboarding. For myself I discovered reggae and this singer / songwriter thing. That really fascinated me and I practiced playing guitar at home. It was always clear for me to sing in English or patois, ”is how Bart-Williams describes his career.

He started composing at the age of twelve, and is mainly influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley to this day . Even before his 18th birthday he played in various bands , including the BantuCrew (Brotherhood Alliance Navigating Towards Unity), with which he landed hits in the Nigerian charts. Eventually he came to the music label Yo Mama and in 1999 accompanied Lauryn Hill on her European tour . His debut album Ancient Spirit , the follow-up album How Do You Call It? and the "mini-album" Silly Walks Movement Meets Patrice were also released in Japan with some encores . Bart-Williams was a member of the Brothers Keepers association and also sings in the group's songs like It or Will We Ever Know . His band, Shashamani , not only supported him live, but also recorded his first albums. In 2005, Nile was released.

In 2006 he published Kings of the Field . The song is based on Bob Marley's quote ("Football is Music") and reflects Patrice's love for football . It can only be found on the PlayUp CD along with 15 other songs about football by other artists. In the fall of 2006, Raw And Uncut was released both as a live album and on DVD . On May 23, 2008 he released a new LP. The album and the tour that goes with it are called Free-Patri-Ation! Commissioner Gordon, who has already worked as a producer for Alicia Keys and Joss Stone , among others, was able to be won for the production of the album . On July 24, 2008, Patrice delivered the musical preliminary program for the appearance of Barack Obama in front of the Berlin Victory Column in front of more than 200,000 people. In November 2008 his song Dove of Peace was released , which criticizes the politics of George W. Bush. In September 2010 he released his fifth studio album, One . The song Walking Alone immediately hits the charts. The internationally known artist JR designed the cover for album One . Patrice also works as a successful producer. In his Supow studio in Cologne he produces the album Selah Sue for the artist of the same name , which was awarded gold and double platinum in 2011 in France and Belgium. Further productions follow, including the recently released album Landing On a Hundred by Cody ChesnuTT . The album "The Rising of the Son" was released at the end of August 2013. Patrice then strongly returned to his reggae roots. "Reggae [...] is also the music that I feel the most. It doesn't have to be completely authentic reggae, but rather sounds influenced by it. [...] I tried to produce a very cool kind of reggae. Im Meaning of cool, new sounds and a new style, "said Patrice in an interview. Features on "The Rising of the Son" are Busy Signal , Selah Sue , Cody ChesnuTT and Ikaya.

In July 2016 Patrice released his new single "Burning Bridges". Produced by the French Picard Brothers, who u. a. are responsible for the current Major Lazer single, and written in co-authorship with Diplo ( Major Lazer , Madonna , Beyonce ) and the singer MO, “Burning Bridges” is the first single from the new album “Life's Blood”.

Patrice is under contract with the French label "Because Music". In Germany, Austria and Switzerland he publishes his music on his own label "Supow Music".
