The Piz Mundaun is located southwest of Ilanz in the Grisons Surselva and is sometimes also called Bündner Rigi in the region . From its summit you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Bernese and Austrian Alps. Many visitors therefore refer to the Piz Mundaun as one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in Switzerland, and the view can best be compared to that on the Rigi on Lake Lucerne.

The villages of Flond and Surcuolm are on the northern slope of Piz Mundaun . In contrast to the neighboring Obersaxen , which was settled by the Walsers and is German-speaking, one speaks Romansh here . On the south side is the Val Lumnezia with the Romanesque villages Vella , Morissen and Cumbel . With more than 15 lifts, Piz Mundaun is an important winter sports destination and a popular hiking area in summer.

The new political municipality of Mundaun is named after Piz Mundaun , to which Surcuolm and Flond merged on January 1, 2009 . On January 1, 2016, Mundaun merged with Obersaxen to form the new municipality of Obersaxen Mundaun .

On the south side, steep grass slopes reach up to the summit , on the north side a rock bank blocks direct access. A chairlift leads from Surcuolm to the ridge with the mountain inn, about 100 meters west of the survey point. Marked mountain paths provide easy access from all sides. One of the paths continues over the entire ridge to Piz Sezner.
