Carolina is a hamlet in the Graubünden municipality of Zernez on the border between Upper and Lower Engadine . Carolina used to be a regular passenger station on the Bever – Scuol – Tarasp line of the Rhaetian Railway . Today Carolina serves as an alternate point.

location

The hamlet of Carolina is on the Bever - Scuol - Tarasp route of the Rhaetian Railway. The station is at 1568  m above sea level. M. Politically, the hamlet belongs to the Lower Engadine municipality of Zernez, geographically to the Upper Engadine. Immediately next to the hamlet, the Val Tantermozza gorge falls down to the Inn. The railway line crosses this gorge by means of a high viaduct.

Carolina is the starting point for the hike to Chamonna Tantermozza (Eng. Tantermozza Hut ) at 1771  m above sea level. M. The hut is located in the area of the Swiss National Park and allows ibex and chamois observations .

history

The area of God Carolina (dt. Carolina Forest ) was uninhabited and undeveloped until the construction of the Rhaetian Railway. The valley road, now Hauptstrasse 27 , has always led across the other side of the valley.

The train station was built by the architect Meinrad Lorenz and opened on July 1, 1913. The hamlet consists of the two houses of the railway station directly on the railway line, as well as two other railwayman's houses a good 200 m from the railway station. Until May 2012, a footpath led from the Punt Nova ( New Bridge , crossing of the cantonal road over the Inn ) to the hamlet. The footbridge over the Ova da Tantermozza was torn away during a storm. The former ford is no longer passable for vehicles. The station can be reached from above through God Carolina Forest.

Carolina was inhabited by several families with numerous children in the first decades after the railway line opened. The station served as a regular passenger station from 1913 to 1999. The setting was made due to the low number of passengers. Today Carolina serves as a passing point, with 13 scheduled crossings per day (as of 2013) and as a base for construction work. The official abbreviation of the station is CARO. Despite the cessation of passenger traffic, Carolina continues to be listed in the Swiss tariff system . The buildings are now partially inhabited by holiday guests. They can get on and off at the station.

From 1960 to 1970, the Engadin power plants built a 14-kilometer long tunnel under God Carolina , which carries water from S-chanf in the Upper Engadine to the Ova Spin plant 4 kilometers southeast of Zernez . The excavation was deposited on the opposite side of the Val Tantermozza from Carolina, a few meters above the railway line, where a conspicuous, only sparsely wooded mound of rubble can still be seen today.

Language and literature

A linguistic assignment of Carolina to the Graubünden Romance idioms Putèr and Vallader is now obsolete because the hamlet is uninhabited.

However, the two authors and brothers Andri and Oscar Peer , who write in German and Vallader, spent part of their childhood in Carolina. Carolina played a role in their works for both authors, for example with Andri Peer in the short story Christmas in Carolina and with Oscar Peer in the novel La rumur dal flüm .
