Val Tantermozza (Zernez)

The Val Tantermozza is located in the municipality of Zernez in the Swiss Lower Engadine . The valley flows from the south near Carolina into the valley of the Inn . The valley is dominated by the peaks of Piz Quatterval ( 3165  m above sea level ), Piz d'Esan (3126 m above sea level) and Piz Tantermozza (3068 m above sea level).

The valley is traversed by the Ova da Tantermozza . Part of the water of the Ova da Tantermozza is 1659 m above sea level. M. and led via a tunnel to the Ova Spin plant of the Engadine power plants, 7 kilometers away, southeast of Zernez. With a maximum of one cubic meter per second, it is one of the smallest versions of the Engadin power plants.

Apart from its lowest part, the Val Tantermozza is located in the Swiss National Park . The valley is accessible from Zernez or Brail via the works road of the Engadine power stations: A hiking trail leads from the turning area in God d'Arguond (German Arguond forest ) to Chamanna Tantermozza (German Tantermozza hut ) at 1771 m above sea level. From this service hut for national park rangers , ibex and chamois observations are possible. The parts above the Chamanna Tantermozza , namely the Plan Tantermozza ( Tantermozza plain ) are closed to hikers. One of the very few bearded vulture pairs in Switzerland breeds in the restricted area (as of 2012). In addition, 210 million year old traces of dinosaurs were found at the Spi da Tantermozza (German: Tantermozza ridge ) in 2007 .

Ibex were released in the Val Tantermozza in 1933 and 1934. The animals released in 1934 came from the Peter and Paul Wildlife Park near St. Gallen and the Harder Alpine Wildlife Park in Interlaken .

The gorge in the lower part of the valley is crossed by the Rhaetian Railway with a 98.5 m long and 47 m high arch bridge at 1570 m above sea level. M. The viaduct was built in 1912 and inaugurated in 1913 with the Bever-Scuol-Tarasp line . Southwest of the bridge is the Carolina station of the Rhaetian Railway.

The name Tantermozza means mill funnel in Romansh and refers to the funnel-like shape.
