The Lago di Livigno is the head storage of the three power plant levels of the Engadine power plants. The top level Livigno – Ova Spin is designed as a pumped storage power plant and can pump water from the Inn into Lake Livigno, the other two levels Ova Spin – Pradella and Pradella – Martina are designed as storage power plants.

There are 46 km between the S-chanf Inn water intake and the return of the water in Martina . The tunnel system of the power plant group consists of gravity and pressure tunnels , which are 4 to 6 m in diameter and run up to 1,500 m below the surface. The greatest overburden can be found in the area of Piz Clemgia . Several kilometers of the tunnel system cross under the national park.

In addition to the power plants, EKW also operate the Munt-la-Schera tunnel , which serves as access to the Punt dal Gall dam on Lake Livigno and as an entrance to Livigno .

Livigno – Ova Spin level

The Ova Spin headquarters located in the Spölschlucht gorge bears the name of a hamlet on the Ofenpass road. It processes the water from the Lago di Livigno and there in as a balancing reservoir serving Lai dad Ova Spin out. In off- peak times , it can pump the water from the equalization basin back into Lake Livigno. In addition to water from Lake Livigno, it is also filled with water from the Inn , the Ova da Varusch and the Vallember . This water is collected near S-chanf and channeled into the lake via a 15 km long gravity tunnel .

The machine house is located under the overflow of the dam and can only be reached via an access building on the right side of the valley. Two vertical Francis turbines are installed, which can also serve as pumps by using the generator as a drive motor. In pumping mode, the turbines are started by a frequency converter and can be operated at either 375 / min or 500 / min depending on the delivery head, which varies with the level of the lakes. The total installed capacity is 50 MW, both in turbine and pump operation. 100 GWh are produced annually and 49 GWh are required for pumping.

Level Ova Spin – Pradella

The headquarters in Pradella near Scuol is the group's largest power plant. With four vertical Francis turbines, it processes the water from the Lai dad Ova Spin, which is fed in via a 20 km long pressure tunnel. Each machine group has an output of 72 MW, so that the total output is 288 MW. The power plant produces around 1 TWh of energy annually, making it the Swiss hydropower plant with the second largest electricity production. Only the Bieudron power plant, which processes water from the Lac des Dix , generates even more electricity.

The control center for the entire power plant group is also located at the Pradella headquarters, as is the open-air switchgear that connects to the European network . Since the 1990s, combines a 380 kV - high-voltage line Pradella directly with Austria . Another three-pole 380 kV line from Sils im Domleschg coming Albula line also ends there. The Laufenburg electricity company , which, like Engadiner Kraftwerke AG, supplies the Lower Engadine with electricity, has the right to use this energy road .

Level Pradella – Martina

The Martina headquarters is located underground in a cavern near Martina on the border with Austria . It processes the water from the Pradella equalization basin, which is fed in via a 14 km long pressure tunnel. The two machine groups with Francis turbines have a combined output of 70 MW. Around 290 GWh of energy are produced annually.
