The Munt-la-Schera-Tunnel (also Tunnel Munt la Schera , Tunnel Livigno ) under the Munt la Schera is a road tunnel that connects the Engadin in the Swiss canton of Graubünden with Livigno in the Italian province of Sondrio . It was created for the construction of the Punt dal Gall dam on the Swiss-Italy border , which was completed in 1968. It was used to transport building materials for the 130-meter-high arch dam . After the wall was completed and the lake flooded, the tunnel was opened to general traffic with restrictions. The owners are the Engadin power plants .
The tunnel is 3385 meters long and begins at Punt la Drossa in the Ova dal Fuorn valley , on the Ofenpass road , which is open all year round , and runs east of the Spölschlucht in a practically straight line to the south to the north shore of Lago di Livigno . Both portals are on the territory of the municipality of Zernez and thus on Swiss territory. From the south portal, the road runs west over the Punt dal Gall and then south - constantly along the banks of the reservoir - to Livigno . The Swiss customs station is located at the northern tunnel portal, the toll station of the Engadine power stations on the dam and the Italian customs at the western end; the state border runs across the dam.
The tunnel is only accessible in one lane, the direction change usually takes place every 15 minutes. During the peak times of the ski season, the tunnel is only opened in one direction by the hour. Then the tunnel can be opened from 5:00 am to 10:00 am respectively. 5: 00–11: 00 only in the direction of Switzerland and from 10: 00–20: 00 respectively. 11: 00-19: 00 only in the direction of Livigno. During the night, the alternating use of the tunnel is regulated by a traffic light. Vehicles with a maximum height of 3.6 meters and a maximum width of 2.5 meters are permitted. Use is subject to a fee, the toll is paid at the south portal at the toll station on the dam. The route has been open continuously since January 1, 2010, previously the tunnel was closed at night. As the use of bicycles in the tunnel was officially prohibited in mid-2008, a chargeable shuttle bus for cyclists runs from mid-June to mid-September every day between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Due to increasing tourist traffic, there were more and more traffic jams on the Ofenpassstrasse in winter, which blocked the access to the Münstertal . This situation is now being counteracted by “traffic control points”. Travelers to Livigno are collected in upstream squares and then let through the tunnel in blocks.
