Valchava ( [ˌvalˈtɕavɐ] ? / I ; German and officially Valcava until 1943 ) was until December 31, 2008 a political municipality in the Val Müstair district in the Inn district of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. Audio file / audio sample

On January 1, 2009, Valchava merged with the other Swiss municipalities in the valley ( Fuldera , , Müstair , Santa Maria Val Müstair and Tschierv ) to form the municipality of Val Müstair . The name Valchava means "deep valley".

The former municipality is located on the right-hand slope of the Val Müstair (Münstertal) 1.8 kilometers west of Santa Maria Val Müstair . It consists of the village, the hamlet of Valpaschun (1771 m) and various farms. Both in the south and in the north, the municipal boundary extends up to 2900 m. The highest point in the municipality is the Piz Terza (2907 m) in the far north.

Of the entire former municipality area of ​​1671 hectares, 566 hectares are forested and 313 hectares are mountain. The majority of the agriculturally usable land, namely 618 of 768 hectares, is cultivated as Maiensässen . The remaining 24 hectares of the area are settlement areas.

In the 19th century there was already a small German-speaking minority, but this continued to shrink until 1970. In 1880 69%, in 1910 72%, 1941 75% and 1970 even 90% said Romansh as their mother tongue. To this day , the language of the majority is Jauer , a dialect of the Romansh Vallader . Religions and denominations

In the 1530s, after the Reformation , the residents switched to the Protestant faith. The Catholic Church was built for the Catholic faithful in 1896.

history

The place is first mentioned in a land register of the Müstair monastery . This and the Marienberg Abbey had properties in Valchava at that time. In 1879 the previously independent municipality of Valpaschun was merged with Valchava.

  • In the middle of September 2006, the approximately 5 km long nature discovery trail Senda Trafögl was inaugurated around Valchava . The path begins on the northern side of the valley and leads first to the west along the Rambach (in this part he deals with the element of water), then rises to 1552 meters (element of air), and then falls off at Rünca Sot and the Cross the valley road.
