The federal road 55a (abbreviation: B 55a ) is a road in North Rhine-Westphalia that is not listed in the official directory of German federal highways and was originally planned as an extension of the A 57 to the eastern part of the Cologne motorway ring as part of the largely rejected planning of the Cologne city motorway . It lies entirely in the urban area of Cologne and has a length of around six kilometers. The road construction load is therefore with the city of Cologne and not with the state agency for road construction in North Rhine-Westphalia .

At the level of Neusser Straße ( B 9 ), the B 55a begins as an extension of the Innere Kanalstraße (L 100) and leads in an easterly direction as a six-lane motorway to the Köln-Ost motorway junction , where it merges into the federal motorway 4 in the direction of Olpe . In doing so, it first crosses the Rhine on the zoo bridge , passes the Cologne trade fair and then crosses under the Kalk-Nord marshalling yard in a 600-meter-long tunnel . It is also connected to federal highways 51 (Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer) and 8 (Frankfurter Straße). The B 55 runs a few hundred meters south, largely parallel to the B 55a.

The B 55a is crossed on the Zoobrücke by the Cologne cable car , which leads from the zoo on the left bank of the Rhine to the Rhine park on the right bank of the Rhine .

The tunnel, which passes under the tracks of the marshalling yard as well as Germania and Remscheider Strasse, has a two-story design, which is very rare in Germany. The lanes to the east run below the road to the west. Due to a review by the Cologne fire brigade, necessary structural, in particular fire protection, improvements were started in July 2014 with the fundamental renovation, which should actually be finished in February 2016, but due to construction defects, according to press reports, until the end of 2018, should delay. Finally, since January 14, 2019, the tunnel has been completely drivable again, with three lanes in each direction.
