  • The national highway 189 (abbreviation: B 189 ) is a German federal highway in the states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt . It runs from Magdeburg via Wolmirstedt , Stendal , Osterburg , Seehausen and Wittenberge to Wittstock .

    history

    origin

After the Berlin-Hamburger Chaussee was expanded into an art street between 1827 and 1830, the connecting routes branching off from Perleberg were also expanded in the 1840s. First, the road between Wittenberge and Perleberg was expanded into an art road in 1843. Road construction between Wittenberge and Stendal took place in 1846 at the same time as the construction of the railway line . In 1849 the eastern section from Perleberg to Pritzwalk was built.

    Previous routes and names

The Prussian Staatschaussee No. 86a as a branch of the Prussian Staatschaussee No. 86 (today's B 71 ) began in Dolle and led via Stendal, Osterburg and Seehausen to Wittenberge.

The national highway 189 was introduced to the 1937th This road lay entirely on the territory of the GDR and was designated as Fernverkehrsstrasse 189 (abbreviation F 189 ). In 2003, this federal road from Pritzwalk to Wittstock (junction of the A 19 ) was  extended by 19.5 kilometers by upgrading state road 15 to the federal road. A further extension from Wittstock to the Mecklenburg town of Mirow is planned.

    Replacements

In the GDR era, a bypass road was built for Wittenberge, which ran from Weisen to Seehausen over a length of 21.5 kilometers. In the course of this bypass road, a new road bridge was built over the Elbe , which, with an extension of 1,110 meters, was the longest road bridge built in the GDR. Construction began in June 1973 and was completed on July 21, 1978 with the opening of the bypass. In the 1980s, Osterburg was also given a generous bypass road. In 2003, the four-lane B 189n was completed as a western bypass in the Barleben and Wolmirstedt area . The Mittelland Canal was tunneled under for the crossing-free route, which directly adjoins the A 2 . In 2004, various sections were then expanded in the Brandenburg area. On the one hand, there is the narrow, curvy and almost 4.5 kilometer long stretch of road between Kuhbier and Groß Pankow, lined with many trees. It has been replaced by a two-lane highway. Another section extends the Wittenberge bypass into a new Perleberg bypass. The road here is partly three-lane. Since June 2005, the Hanseatic city of Stendal has been bypassed in the south (together with federal highway 188 ) and in the east over a length of approx. 10 km. On December 19, 2007, the last section of the Pritzwalk bypass was opened to traffic. Currently, the section between Perleberg and Pritzwalk, which partly still does not have a central marking, is being expanded as an intersection-free road. As part of this, the Kuhbier bypass was built in 2013 and opened on November 4th of the same year. A 3.6 km long bypass for cow beer was created, which also bypasses a large part of the avenue between Pritzwalk and Kuhbier.

    Between the feeder to the Colbitz junction ( A 14 ) and the Wolmirstedt junction ( A 14 ), the B 189 was downgraded to Landesstraße 29 on October 29, 2014 .
