history

The name Weisens comes from Polabian and means "place where reeds / sedge grows". Weisen was mentioned for the first time in 1424 in a document about the liquidation of the damage done to the Mark from the lands of Duchess Katharina von Mecklenburg.

Numerous aristocratic families settled in Prignitz during the Wende Crusades. The von Restorff family of knights (later spelling also “von Retzdorff”), born in the Lüchow-Dannenberg area, was resident for several generations in a domain around Weisen in a castle called “Neuburg”.

In a historical document from 1441 the enfeoffment of Mr. Cone von Restorff with Schloss Neuburg, Klein Breese, Groß Breese, Kuhblank, Weisen and various other possessions is recorded. In the following time, changing ownership conditions prevailed in the lands until the von Restorff family bought back the manor again in 1563 (i.e. all of Neuburg and Weisen).

Between 1569 and 1609 the manor Weisen was divided into Weisen I and Weisen II. In 1619 half of Neuburg went to the Quitzows on Rühstädt. In 1646 the von Lüderitz family acquired parts of the land. In 1805 the von Retzdorff brothers released the subjects from Kuhblank, Bentwisch, and Groß Breese into self-employment.

The construction of the Chaussee Weisen – Perleberg was an important event for the place, as the sand road was finally replaced by an “art road”. Its inauguration took place on July 31, 1843. With the expansion of Wittenberg as an industrial site, numerous commuters settled in Weisen, and the place became a community of farmers and industrial workers. Today Weisen is the residential town of Wittenberge.

On May 1, 1973, Schilde was incorporated into ways.

Weisen belonged to the Westprignitz district in the province of Brandenburg since 1817 and to the Perleberg district in the GDR district of Schwerin from 1952 . Weisen has been located in the Prignitz district of Brandenburg since 1993.
