In 1992 the Gumtow Office was formed, in which 16 municipalities were combined to form an administrative association. In 2002 the municipalities belonging to the office merged to form the municipality of Gumtow. Today's municipal area is identical to the administrative area of ​​the Brandenburg office of Gumtow, which existed from 1992 to 2002 .

Freimark was the official director of the Gumtow office until 2003 and was elected by the municipal council at its meeting on April 14, 2003 for the remainder of his term of office as mayor of the municipality of Gumtow. He was elected in the mayoral election on May 29, 2016 with 50.7% of the valid votes for a further term of eight years.

Gumtow is located on federal highway 5 between Perleberg and Kyritz and on federal highway 103 between Pritzwalk and Kyritz. The state road L 143 connects the district of Gumtow with the districts of Schönhagen and Vehlin.
