history

Breddin is one of the largest villages in the Prignitz and is said to be of Wendish origin. Linguists assume that the name is derived from the Slavic basic word brot = ford. The place has been documented since the 13th century. The foundation deed of the field stone church dates from 1273. Of all the medieval churches in Prignitz, only the Breddiner can prove the exact year of inauguration: when the altar was demolished in 1846, the document of the consecration was found in it. Breddin with its districts Obermühle, Breddin Abbau and Kümmernitz (now district of Havelberg) belonged to the Havelberg cathedral chapter for many years . In terms of shape, Breddin is a street village. The station was built exactly 40 years after the opening of the Berlin-Hamburg railway and was opened in 1886. Breddin has always been very active in terms of culture and sport: the men's choir was founded in 1869, the gymnastics club in 1907. Many craftsmen and tradespeople have settled here over the years. In 1957 Voigtsbrügge was incorporated, in 1973 Damelack and Sophienhof.

Breddin belonged to the Ostprignitz district in the province of Brandenburg since 1817 and to the Kyritz district in the GDR district of Potsdam from 1952 . Breddin has been in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district in Brandenburg since 1993.
