Charles Mielatz

Charles Mielatz (also: Charles Frederick Mielatz ; full name Charles Frederick William Mielatz ; born May 24, 1864 in Breddin , Province of Brandenburg ; † June 2, 1919 in New York ) was a German-American etcher , graphic artist , painter and lithographer . He is considered a pioneer of multi-plate color etching.

He was born as the son of Carl Mielatz and his wife Wilhelmina nee Wolff in the Prussian province of Brandenburg in the Ostprignitz district and was baptized with the name Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Mielatz . At the age of six he emigrated to the USA with his parents . In Chicago he was trained as a student at the School of Design there .

In the early 1880s Mielatz moved to New York City, where he made his first etching in 1883. The pioneer of multi-plate color etching produced numerous etchings with landscapes, cityscapes and historical scenes. In 1904 he became one of the first etching teachers at the New York National Academy of Design .

He was a member of the New York Etching Club and the Brooklyn Society of Etchers , but from 1906 also an associate member of the National Academy of Design.
