History and etymology

Syringe house in lady paint

The place was first mentioned in 1275 as Damlank . The name is derived from the Slavic language from the word dab (daml) for oak and laka (lanka) for wet, damp meadow. It can therefore be translated as Eichenau . A manor originally belonged to the Angerdorf . In 1339/1340 the first 14.5 Damlake farms came into the possession of the Stift zum Heiligengrabe monastery . The remaining 8.25 farms were sold to the monastery by the knights Arnold Zack and his brother in 1440. The residents of Damelake had to do feudal services from 1445 onwards . From 1540 onwards, the name Damelacke appeared in the documents for the first time .

In the Thirty Years War in 1626 the manor and the church were destroyed. In addition to this suffering, plague and cholera also came to the village and claimed a total of 110 lives in 1636. The remaining residents were not discouraged by this and built a half-timbered church in 1655 . A schoolmaster was first recorded in 1692.

With the discontinuation of serfdom in 1815, artisans came to the farmers in the village. They built a mill, a forge; a school came into being. There was also a carpenter, a tailor and a shoemaker. In 1828 craftsmen built a syringe house . Forty houses in Damelack have survived from 1846. There was a modest economic boom in the village, which was promoted by the proximity to the Berlin – Hamburg railway line . In addition, there was the breeding of silkworms , which was operated at the behest of the Prussian King Friedrich II to set up his own spinning mill. In the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 and 1871, three residents of the village died. The residents erected a monument in their honor.

In 1907 and 1908 the parish built a new sacred building . In 1911 the volunteer fire brigade was founded. In the First World War , nine residents died as a result of the war. In 1925 the place was connected to the electricity network. In 1931 there were 62 residential buildings. The further infrastructure was promoted in particular through the construction of a paved road. Work on this began in 1937 and 1938, but could only be completed in 1952 due to the Second World War . During this time, 18 residents of the place fell.

During the GDR era, the first LPG Karl Marx was founded in 1952, initially with 25 members. In 1957, craftsmen built a new forester's house. The LPG was supplemented in 1960 by another production cooperative Frohes Leben. It had 43 members and farmed 285 hectares of land. The school closed in 1967 and the children have been going to school in Breddin since then. From then on, the building was used for consumption. On July 1, 1973, the previously independent municipality of Damelack was incorporated into Breddin . In 1985 and 1986 the place was connected to a central water supply.

After reunification , the place received a new road connection and a redesign of the village square. The LPGs disbanded; some previous owners joined forces to form an agricultural cooperative. In 2004 a railway overpass was inaugurated. In 2005 a support association was founded to preserve the church. As a first measure, the roof was renovated in 2009. In 2011 a playground was built on the village green.
