Vorauer handwriting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vorau manuscript is a medieval composite manuscript (end of the 12th century) from the Augustinian canons of Vorau in Styria , Austria . It is kept there under the signature Cod. 276; it contains, among other things, some works by Ava , the first German-speaking poet known by name, who most likely worked in the vicinity of Melk Abbey , as well as the so-called imperial chronicle , the first important German-language historical poem.

The lovingly designed initials in the form of intertwined animal figures should also be mentioned as particularly striking. The language of the various manuscripts is consistently the Bavarian- Austrian variety of Middle High German , also in texts that are actually based on a model from another linguistic region, such as the originally Upper Franconian Ezzo song.
