Otto Haendler (born April 18, 1890 in Löwenhagen , Königsberg district ; † January 12, 1981 in Berlin ) was a German Protestant theologian and university professor .

Life

Otto Haendler was a son of Wilhelm Haendler (1863–1938), pastor in Löwenhagen and Bromberg , then Superintendent of Potsdam and finally General Superintendent of Berlin-Land.

Otto Haendler studied theology from 1909 to 1913 in Berlin and Tübingen with Adolf von Harnack , Adolf Schlatter and Reinhold Seeberg . Then he began his pastoral training at the Berliner Domkandidatenstift under the direction of Ernst Dryander , where he was ordained in 1916 . In 1919 he became pastor in Gumtow and in 1925 moved to the St. Nikolai Church in Stralsund . In 1931 he took over the leadership of the Szczecin Preachers' Seminary , which he had to give up after conflicts with the German Christians . From 1935 to 1949 he was pastor in Neuenkirchen (near Greifswald) .

Haendler was already in Berlin in 1925 for his Lic. Theol. and had completed his habilitation for practical theology in Greifswald in 1930 . From 1935 to 1937 completed training as a psychotherapist . After the end of the Second World War, he became an associate professor and, in 1946, a full professor of practical theology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald . From 1951 until his retirement in 1959 he was professor for practical theology at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

He is considered one of the fathers of pastoral psychology .

One of Haendler's sons is the church historian Gert Haendler .
