Gert Haendler
Gert Otto Haendler (born August 17, 1924 in Berlin ; † November 28, 2019 in Rostock ) was a German Protestant theologian , university professor for church history , especially patristic and early medieval theology, dean of a theological faculty and author of books on church history.
Life
Gert Haendler grew up in a family with a middle -class academic tradition. His father Otto Haendler (1890–1981) was a professor of theology, his grandfather Wilhelm Haendler (1863–1938) general superintendent of Berlin-Land. Dealer visited the elementary and further education school in Stralsund and Stettin . In 1942 he passed the Abitur in Greifswald . In the same year he became a soldier in the Wehrmacht in a tank regiment . In May 1945, he fell in Magdeburg in captivity . Afterwards he worked for some time as a farm worker for farmers in Hamersleben . From 1946 to 1950 he studied Protestant theology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald . During this time he worked as assistant to Walter Elliger at the chair for Christian archeology . After successfully passing the exam in May 1950, he received his doctorate in November of the same year with a thesis on church scriptures from the Carolingian era. Shortly afterwards he became a research assistant in the field of church history at the Humboldt University of Berlin . In 1954, he was with a thesis on "The Frankish opinion on the Byzantine Iconoclastic Controversy" habilitation . In 1956 he taught as a lecturer at the faculty there. In 1960 he took over a professorship with a teaching position at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg , but in 1961 he took over the chair for church history at the theological faculty of the Wilhelm Pieck University in Rostock . From 1965 to 1968 he also worked there as dean and from 1968 to 1970 as vice dean . From 1970 to 1972 he was also a member of the Scientific Council , and from 1972 to 1986 he promoted athletic training as a member of the university's sports committee.
Most of his publications fell during his time in Rostock. From 1970 to 2004 he was one of the co-editors of a “Church History in Individual Representations” (KGE). In 1989 Haendler retired .
