Václav Laurin (born October 16, 1865 in Kamení , † August 13, 1930 in Mladá Boleslav ) was a Czech technician and industrialist.

Life

Laurin learned in what was then the Austro-Hungarian monarchy belonging Bohemian town of Mladá Boleslav (Mlada Boleslav) the profession of locksmith . In 1883 he passed an examination for operating steam engines in Dresden , in Turnov (Turnau) he and his partner Josef Kraus, who came from there, acquired extensive knowledge of the manufacture of bicycles.

After they separated in an argument, Laurin moved to Jungbunzlau. While looking for a new workshop, he came across the bicycle-loving bookseller Václav Klement by chance , who was also looking for a workshop, but to have his defective bike repaired. The businessman and mechanic founded the company Laurin & Klement in 1895 , where they manufactured bicycles under the patriotic name of Slavia in line with the new Czech national movement that emerged at the end of the 19th century sold.

The company grew rapidly, with the manufacture of motorcycles in 1899 and finally that of automobiles in 1905. After the collapse of the Danube monarchy, Laurin & Klement became Czech in 1918 , and in 1925 the company was sold to Škoda (mechanical engineering) (Václav Laurin remained the technical director until his death).
