history
Due to its special location on the southern edge of the Leipzig lowland bay, the elongated ridge of the Veitsberg was inhabited by Wünschendorf in prehistoric times. The village, located at the confluence of the Weißer Elster and Weida, was in the early Middle Ages on the edge of a Slavic settlement chamber around Gera . This is also indicated by the place name, which is derived from Wendendorf - Windischendorf. The ridge known today as Vitusberg is said to have initially supported a castle, from which the six fords over the Elster could be controlled and protected. In writings from the 16th century, 974 is mentioned as the year the St. Vitus Church was founded. Today's church building goes back more to the 11th or 12th century. The church is one of the oldest churches in the Vogtland .
In 1193, not far from the village, the Mildenfurth monastery was donated by the bailiffs von Weida as a house monastery. Then the original place name Mildenfurth for Wünschendorf (1209: in slavica villa Mildenvorde ) gradually passed to the monastery. In 1238, Jutta, the wife of Heinrich IV., Vogt von Weida, founded the Cronschwitz Monastery, another house monastery for female family members and the Vogtland nobility. Only the ruins of the church have been preserved to this day.
During the Second World War , 15 women and men from the Soviet Union had to do forced labor in an aero engine repair factory that was essential to the war effort.
Incorporations
The places Veitsberg and Cronschwitz had already been incorporated on August 1, 1945. Meilitz , Pösneck , Untitz , Zossen and Zschorta followed on July 1, 1950 . Mosen lost his independence on September 2, 1995 and has been part of Wünschendorf since then.
