Grimmelshausen is a Thuringian municipality in the administrative community Feldstein in the Frankish coined Hildburghausen .
geography
The clustered village of Grimmelshausen is located on both sides of the Werra above the confluence of the lock about 500 m from the federal road 89 , which leads from Meiningen to Sonneberg and Kronach .
Since 1990 the Werra has been dammed by a retention basin, which resulted in the settlement of rare bird species. Hiking trails have been laid out and the Werratal cycle path from Reurieth via Themar to Henfstädt leads through Grimmelshausen.
history
In 1177 Grimmelshausen was first mentioned in a document under the name Grymoltushusen . The family tree of the originally noble, moderately wealthy von Grimmelshausen family in Thuringia can be traced back to this year. The family castle on the upper Werra was located near the village. The von Grimmelshausen family moved to the imperial city of Gelnhausen an der Kinzig around 1571 . The well-known Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen was born there.
During the Thirty Years War, the place was partially destroyed by marauding soldiers in 1634.
In terms of lordship, the place in the Themar office initially belonged to the county of Henneberg , after 1583 to various Saxon duchies and from 1826 to 1918 to Saxony-Meiningen . In 1920 he came to the state of Thuringia .
