Schmeheim is a municipality in the Hildburghausen district in the Franconian south of the Free State of Thuringia . She belongs to the administrative community Feldstein . The administrative seat is in the city of Themar .

Neighboring towns are the municipalities of Oberstadt and Marisfeld also in the Hildburghausen district, Dillstädt in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district and the districts of Suhl: Wichtshausen , Dietzhausen and Mäbendorf .

history

It was first mentioned in a document in 914. During the time of the tribal duchies, the place was in the Duchy of Franconia . In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Knights of Schmeheim lived here . In terms of lordship, the place in the Themar office initially belonged to the county of Henneberg , after 1583 to various Saxon duchies and from 1826 to 1918 to Saxony-Meiningen . In 1920 he came to the state of Thuringia .

Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Nicholas

In the village stands the church of St. Nicholas on a hill . Your age is unknown. In 1697 the church was rebuilt and extensively renovated in 1836 and 1876. A redesign followed in 1911 and from 1994 to 2005 the facade was repaired.

Other historical buildings are a former inn with a cellar from 1607, a former school built in 1894, the bakery from 1873 and the village inn built in 1953.

Customs and traditions

The local dialect, the Henneberg-Franconian dialect, is cultivated by the older residents among themselves.

The parade to the parish fair is organized by the fair society in historical costume.

Other events are the pond festival at the end of June and the Backhaus festival in August.
