Location of the city of Ummerstadt in the Hildburghausen district | ||
Ummerstadt is a town in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia and has been a member of the Heldburger Unterland administrative community since 1994 . With 461 inhabitants (December 31, 2018) it is the smallest city in Thuringia, the smallest in the Franconia region and the second smallest in Germany .
Geographical location
Ummerstadt is located in the Heldburger Land in the southernmost tip of the Free State of Thuringia. A large part of the district boundaries is also the state border between Thuringia and Bavaria, behind which the Coburg Land lies. The neighboring city in Thuringia is Heldburg , neighboring cities in Bavaria are Bad Rodach , Seßlach and Coburg . Due to its location on the Rodach river , which drains over the Itz into the Main , Ummerstadt belongs to the catchment area of the Rhine .
history
In the Codex Eberhardi , a collection of documents from the Fulda Monastery , copies of which were made around 1140, numerous places in the Grabfeldgau were named for the first time. Ummerstadt probably has one of the two names that cannot be assigned with certainty: “Uundrungeuui” (document 507 of October 17, 837) or “Gubrahtestat” (document 520 of October 2, 838). Heldburg and Hellingen are also mentioned in both documents. A Würzburg document no. 5630 from February 1, 1223 again mentions Heldburg and “Umerstat” together. A Wettin copy book contains the copy of the lost town charter of December 2, 1394, which was issued in the "Dorf Heldburg". Heldburg received city rights on the same day. The Ummerstadt residents emphasized, however, that they had already received city rights under the Hennebergs (i.e. 1374 at the latest, the last year of the Henneberg rule ), but that the document had been lost. In fact, in connection with the transfer of the Hennebergischen care of Coburg as a dowry (to which Ummerstadt belonged) to the Landgrave of Thuringia and Margrave of Meißen, Friedrich III. (the severity) , Ummerstadt called a city. Ummerstadt thus has the city of Hennberg and Wettin.
There was a fortification on the Kirchberg of Ummerstadt. The wall, the gate and the gate tower as well as the remains of the moat still bear witness to this.
During the Thirty Years' War , 52 houses and all public buildings burned down in September 1632. In the following years the city only had about 100 inhabitants. Eleven years later there were only 26 inhabited houses.
From the 18th century, the pottery was the dominant industry in the small town.
Due to its location in the border area of the GDR , Ummerstadt was exposed to strong migration even before the fall of the Berlin Wall. As early as 1952/1953, citizens who were seen to be in political danger had to leave the city. Ummerstadt had almost a thousand inhabitants when the GDR was founded in 1949, but this number almost halved in the following decades. The Erlebach district was completely cleared by 1982. In the second half of the 1980s, Ummerstadt became the smallest town in the GDR. After 1990 the emigration trend continued unchanged. In 1992 the population voted in a referendum in favor of Ummerstadt's independence.

coat of arms
Blazon : square of gold and blue, inside four lions facing each other: in the first and fourth fields black with a red tongue and armor, in the second and third divided seven times by silver and red.
The coat of arms of Ummerstadt shows on the one hand the Markmeißnischen and on the other hand the Thuringian lions , which confirms the former affiliation to the House of Wettin (when Balthasar von Meißen re-confirmed the old, lost city rights) and to the state of Thuringia. The four fields with the lions first appeared on a seal from 1400.
Buildings
The entire historical location of Ummerstadt is under monument protection, there are also numerous individual monuments.
- The Rodach Bridge from 1565 is important as a monument to the history of the city and traffic.
- The old town still has a closed half-timbered ensemble.
- The market square with the historic town hall is particularly worth seeing; it is said to have been built in 1558 from a stone in the basement. It was renewed in 1682 after the "Swedish Fire". The house facade, which had previously been plastered and richly decorated for fear of further city fires, was only exposed again in 1929.
- The market fountain from 1687 is on the market and the Protestant parish church of St. Bartholomew is nearby .
- The mountain church of St. Andrew probably goes back to a chapel built by Scottish monks around the year 880 and is one of the oldest churches in the area. The fortifications that were added later and that still partially surround the Romanesque church are also impressive. The cemetery is located on the adjacent site, from where a footpath leads to the rectory.
- The former brewery is also located in the middle of the village.
- For the drinking water supply and for brewing beer, a water pipe was laid out centuries ago as a "tube ride", of which one is very proud; the five running fountains in the locality later brought Ummerstadt the nickname "five-fountain city".
dialect
The Main Franconian dialect Itzgründisch is spoken in Ummerstadt .

However, the coat of arms shown on the side shows a silver lion on top.
