history

Felsenkeller near Erlebach in 2011, again provided with a door and lock.

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1310 . The village was a manor of the Marschall family called Greiff and consisted of a castle-like manor house, other houses, a grinding mill and a brickworks. Erlebach belonged to the Office Heldburg in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen until 1918, then to the state of Thuringia. The aristocratic family died out in 1929. From 1940 to July 1945, the district farmers appointed a trustee for the estate. Then the expropriation took place by the Soviet occupation forces . Due to the land reform on December 23, 1945, the estate was divided between farmers and new farmers . In 1948 the manor house was demolished on the instructions of the Soviet occupying forces.

In 1946 the place had 29 inhabitants. It was in the exclusion zone created by the GDR authorities in 1952 , which determined the future fate of the place. In 1961 an agricultural production cooperative "Erlengrund" is founded. In 1975 the evacuation of the village was announced and its residents were forced to relocate. The rock cellars were walled up so that they could not be used as hiding places by fugitives . In December 1986 the last family left the village. Then all the houses were demolished and the surfaces leveled. What remains is the village pond and a memorial plaque at the old village site.
