About this picture
Schweickershausen, castle and church

Schweickershausen is a municipality in the district of Hildburghausen in the Franconian south of Thuringia. The community belongs to the administrative community Heldburger Unterland . The administrative seat is in the city of Heldburg .

location

Schweickershausen is located in the Heldburger Land southwest of Heldburg in the southernmost tip of the state of Thuringia. A large part of the district boundaries is also the state border between Thuringia and Bavaria . In terms of traffic, the village has a connection to county road 503 with the connection to state road 1134.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1317 as Schwichershusin . The community was named Schweickershausen as early as 1340. It can be assumed that a castle or palace already existed in the village at that time. The place was owned by the von Schaumberg family and was sold to Hartung Truchseß von Wetzhausen zu Sternberg in 1469 . Since then, he and his descendants have called themselves Truchsess von Schweickershausen . They ruled the village and died out in 1810.

The place bordered on the Hennebergische Landwehr . Remnants of it can still be seen today.

In 1525/26 the place was taken over by the Reformation and became Lutheran.

Schweickershausen was affected by the persecution of witches from 1630 to 1685. Two women and a man got into witch trials . Hans Müller was burned in 1654.

The Protestant Church of Schweickershausen was consecrated in 1747. Before that there was a church in the same place, which had been built by Martin Truchsess von Wetzhausen , Grand Master of the Teutonic Order .

The present castle was built in the early 18th century and replaced a much older building.

After the division of Germany in 1945, the site was assigned to the Soviet zone of occupation after it was first occupied by the Americans. Border troops were later quartered in the castle . In 1961 a double-row barbed wire fence with a minefield was built and the entire Heldburger Land region was declared a restricted area. Due to the geographically exposed location of the place, it was only possible to leave the normally 5 km wide restricted area to the rest of the GDR after 18 kilometers.

On December 26, 1989, the border was reopened and around 4,000 guests from Bavaria were welcomed and entertained.

The village is mainly built in a Franconian half-timbered construction with an intact listed ensemble. It achieved first places in various competitions, for example the gold medal in the national competition Our village should become more beautiful in 1998 and the silver medal in the European Entente Florale Europe competition in 1999 . The Langer Berg nature reserve is located to the west of the municipality on the border .

The Schweickershausen border monument has existed here since 2006 .
