St. Michael in Schweickershausen

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Michael in the municipality of Schweickershausen in the Hildburghausen district ( Thuringia ) was consecrated in 1747. The listed building stands next to the castle on a hill above the village, characterizing the townscape.

Building history

In 1485 Martin Truchsess von Wetzhausen had a church built behind the castle. In 1747, the then castle and manor owners of Truchseß arranged for a new building as a choir tower church with a retracted tower- bearing choir in Baroque style .

The interior is characterized by a four-sided, single-storey, wooden gallery , which is supported by simple Doric wooden columns and has a balustrade . A white flat ceiling forms the upper end. Until a fire caused by a lightning strike in 1884, there was a painted barrel ceiling.

The equipment includes a stone altar on the east side, above which the pulpit and the organ are located. Theodor Kühn from Schmiedefeld built the organ in the 1890s. It has ten stops on two manuals and a pedal . The choir houses the four meter long and approx three and a half meters wide sacristy , in which there is a tombstone from 1552 on the east side.

The church tower with three floors rises above the choir. He carries two baroque onions that have been slated to the front, separated by a lantern. A tower button and a weather vane form the upper end . Three steel bells hang in the tower instead of bronze bells that were melted down during the world wars.

In the west, under the gallery, is the former gentleman's estate, the church seat of the aristocratic village rulers. The room, furnished with windows, door and coat of arms stone from 1747, has been redesigned as a heated winter church. There is also a non-accessible hereditary crypt of the village rulers under the nave.

In the early 1970s, the church was extensively repaired. The rededication took place on the fourth Advent in 1974. The house of God got the name of St. Michael the Archangel . The next renovation was completed in 1983, including a new slate of the church tower. Another renovation was carried out from 1992 to 1994, including a new roof covering.
