History of origin

At the state border near Schweickershausen, remnants of the former state border of the GDR were forgotten during the clearance work in the 1990s. After a long “deep sleep”, the Erhard family rediscovered these significant monuments of the history of the division of Germany in the course of their monument research . After consultation and approval of the landowner, the Thuringian Forest, the entire complex was renovated and the monument authorities submitted to the protection status. Today the border monument near Schweickershausen is one of the few ground monuments with a factual and spatial reference to the former inner-German border. The sponsorship lies with the German Board of Trustees for the Promotion of Science, Education and Culture eV
