Adventure road of German unity
The Adventure Road of German Unity (also Road of Reminder and Remembrance ) is a tourist and historical route along the former inner-German border . It is intended to serve as a reminder and to commemorate the division of Germany .

The adventure road connects the once divided cultural landscapes in the former border region and runs over a distance of around 2,500 kilometers alternately on east and west German territory through ten federal states .
There are 80 border monuments , 25 borderland museums (for example the German-German Open Air Museum ) and memorials on the inner-German border on the road. It crosses the Green Belt several times , a unique habitat network that runs through 17 natural spaces. 150 nature reserves border the Green Belt. They are home to many rare animal and plant species.
The adventure route of German unity is administered by the "German Board of Trustees for the Promotion of Science, Education and Culture eV - German Unity Design Fund."
History of origin
The idea for the adventure road, the route and the touristic description go back to the Elke, Andreas and Manuel Erhard family, who received the Citizens' Prize for German Unity in 2004 for this initiative .
On May 9, 2004, the inauguration by the Thuringian minister of education Michael Krapp took place at the Thuringian-Bavarian border in the former border section 44.
Route
The Adventure Road of German Unity is considered a closed tourist road, it can be traveled in partial routes or as a whole. The route runs along the former inner-German border, the former border in Berlin and the former transit motorway. It runs through the border regions of the federal states of Bavaria , Thuringia , Hesse , Lower Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt , Brandenburg , Berlin , Schleswig-Holstein , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony .
