Westhausen is a municipality in the Heldburger Land in the Hildburghausen district in the Franconian south of the Free State of Thuringia . It belongs to the administrative community Heldburger Unterland . The administrative seat is in the city of Heldburg . The district of Haubinda belongs to the municipality .
geography
Geographical location
Westhausen is 330 m above sea level in a wide and flat valley created by nature with a hilly landscape. On the outskirts, three source streams unite to form Westhäuser Kreck .

The municipality of Westhausen consists of the districts Westhausen and Haubinda, a former manor.
climate
The climate of the area is mild. In the north the Thuringian Forest and in the west the Rhön protect against cold north winds.
history
The community of Westhausen, a Franconian cluster village , was first mentioned in 776 at the time of Charlemagne . This makes it the oldest municipality in the Heldburger Land and in the Hildburghausen district. The district of Haubinda was first mentioned in 1317 as hay winds. The churchyard was once provided with gaden (also called kemenaten) and a double wall and served to protect the residents when they had to retreat to the churchyard in times of crisis.

In the district of Haubinda there is the Hermann-Lietz-Schule , founded in 1901 by the reform pedagogue Lietz and named after him , a reform-pedagogical rural education home with a primary and a regular as well as a technical college . Courses for secondary school leaving certificate, qualifying secondary school leaving certificate, secondary school leaving certificate and advanced technical college certificate are offered.

The sports club SV 08 Westhausen with its football, table tennis and Nordic walking departments is available for exercise. The small animal breeding association Westhausen und Umgebung eV was founded in 1972. The Aero-Club Südthüringen from 1998 is based in Westhausen.
Buildings
The Evangelical Church of St. Kilian was built in 1466 in the late Gothic style. The old school building in Westhausen dates from 1895. The school building of the Hermann Lietz School in Haubinda was built around 1900.
Regular events
The fair takes place annually in June, the Backhausfest in August.
