Ferdinand Schröder (born April 8, 1818 in Zeulenroda ; † January 24, 1857 there ) was a German physician, politician and important caricaturist.

Life

Schröder was born the son of a soap maker. He started out as an apprentice to a merchant before going to high school (Rutheneum) in Gera . In 1838 he moved to Jena to study medicine. He continued his studies in Würzburg , Vienna and Halle and completed it in Jena in 1844 with a doctorate. During his studies he joined the Saxon corps . From 1845 until his death he worked as an ophthalmologist in Zeulenroda. In addition to his medical work, he had been drawing since the late 1840s and made caricatures as an employee of several magazines. Page works appeared predominantly in the Fliegende Blätter , the Düsseldorfer Mondhefte or in the Dorfbarbier . His circular painting of Europe in August MDCCCXLIX is considered the most important caricature of the revolutions of 1848/1849 .

Schröder was elected to the Frankfurt National Assembly in April 1848 at the age of 30 and, as a well-known public speaker in his homeland, to the Landtag of the Principality. He became Ludwig Bonardy's successor at the end of May 1849 and belonged to the Left Fraction ( Deutscher Hof ). As such, he took part in the Stuttgart rump parliament . The representatives of Thuringia in the Frankfurt National Assembly included 16 members. When Schröder was in Munich he fell ill with typhus and died on his return in Zeulenroda. He wasn't married.

Appreciation

The Dr.-Ferdinand-Schröder-Weg bears his name in his hometown. For his 200th birthday in 2018, the City Museum Zeulenroda honored him with a special exhibition of his caricatures. According to its own information, the museum has the largest Ferdinand Schröder collection with an estimated 350 sheets.
