Kurt Flemig

Kurt Flemig (born May 15, 1909 in Leipzig , † March 2, 1995 in Berlin ) was a German press illustrator , caricaturist , commercial artist , comic artist , illustrator and journalist .

His main occupation was the history of caricature and is known as the author of the cartoonists' dictionary.

education and study

From 1926 to 1927 Flemig completed a correspondence course in the subjects of drawing, painting and graphics, which he completed with a diploma. He was then a student of Erich Wilke (1879-1936; inter alia, draftsman for the magazine Jugend ) until 1929 , where he learned to draw caricatures. In 1934 he attended the Krefeld art school (subject “surfaces”) with Johannes Itten . In 1938/39 he attended the journalism seminar with Emil Dovifat in Berlin. In 1939/1940 he studied directing and animation at the German Film Academy Babelsberg . Finally, from 1952 he attended the 1954 master school for graphics, printing and advertising in East Berlin, where he graduated with an exam on the subject of "Caricature in advertising".

Work areas

Since 1927, 80,000 humorous caricatures have been published in around 500 newspapers and magazines in the German and foreign press and abroad (Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, England, Finland, USA, Mexico). Among other things, drawings by Kurt Flemig appeared in Die Fliegende Blätter in the years 1938–1944, at ZB - Zeit im Bild , in Nebelspalter (Zurich). Also in the collection "Best Cartoons from abroad - a collection of the best cartoons from outstandig publications all over the world" (Authors: Lawrence Lariar, Ben Roth, Crown Publishers, New York, 1955)

Kurt Flemig also designed advertising caricatures, greeting cards and postcards.

The family comic strip Familie Fröhlich , designed by Kurt Flemig, was continued for several years, and the comic strip Köpfchen was published in the chemist's advertising magazine for over 10 years .

Furthermore, the series of caricatures Verquerszeichen and Human Zoo were created .

Kurt Flemig did illustrative work on around 40 books (including Der Spassvogel ; Berlin; Curtius, 1940) and contributions (cultural features journalist since 1934).

Exhibitions

Works by Kurt Flemig have been shown at exhibitions in Berlin (1975, 1977, 1979, 1980), Strasbourg ( Feminisme et antifeminisme , 1975), Tolentino (1981) and New York ( Best cartoons of the world , 1955).

Kurt Flemig's estate is in the German Art Archive of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg .

Publications

In addition to the professional works, gouaches , watercolors and pen drawings were also created . T. von Flemig were given as gifts to family and friends.
