Personalities
A marble sarcophagus in the Cathedral of San Catervo received the bones of Flavius Iulius Catervius and his wife Septimia Severina, who are venerated as saints.
The city is known for Saint Nicholas of Tolentino , who died here on September 10, 1305 and whose bones are kept in the crypt of the Basilica of San Nicola . Tolentino is therefore one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in Italy.
The condottiere Niccolò da Tolentino was born in the village in 1355. Felice Bezzi , Bishop of Pesaro, was born in Tolentino in 1749.
Tolentino is the ancestral seat of the Italian noble family of the Counts Gentiloni Silveri , nobles (Nobili) of Filottrano, Cingoli and Macerata. The family's 13th-century palazzo adjoins the Basilica of San Nicola and was hit by the 2016 earthquake. From this family comes the politician Paolo Gentiloni , who was given honorary citizenship of Tolentino in 2015; he served as Italian Prime Minister from 2016 to 2018.
Battle of Tolentino
The Battle of Tolentino was fought near Tolentino between May 2nd and 3rd, 1815. It was the decisive battle in the Austro-Neapolitan War between the Napoleonic Kingdom of Naples , ruled by Joachim Murat , and the Austrian Empire . The battle has some parallels to the Battle of Waterloo . Both took place during the reign of the Hundred Days after Napoleon's return from exile and ended in a decisive victory for the anti-Napoleonic coalition, resulting in a restoration of Bourbon rule in the Kingdom of Naples.
