Loro Piceno is an Italian commune with 2,263 inhabitants in the province of Macerata in the Marche region .

location

The municipality is located on a hill between Macerata and San Ginesio , south of Fiastra Bach. It is 18 km from the provincial capital Macerata and about 38 km from Fermo , to which the parish belongs ecclesiastically. The historic city center is well preserved. The newest parts of the village are to the west (San Paterniano) and east (Vignali Bagnere).

The neighboring communities include Colmurano , Massa Fermana , Mogliano , Montappone , Petriolo , Ripe San Ginesio , Sant'Angelo in Pontano and Urbisaglia .

history

The place name is derived from the Latin "Castrum lauri", the laurel castle . Later it became Castello di Loro and finally from 1863 Loro Piceno. There are indications of settlement as early as pre-Roman times, including a grave stele that was discovered in 1943 and is exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Ancona . In the 15th century the free municipality of Loro (the addition "Piceno" was added only after the unification of Italy) belonged to Fermo.

  • A relic from Roman times is the “Fonte per tutti” (public fountain) in Via San Serafino da Montegranaro .
  • The Brunforte fortress is located on the highest part of the hill. Together with the laurel it is said to have led to the place name Castrum Lauri.
