Johann Gottlieb Stemler (born November 10, 1788 in Zeulenroda , † August 29, 1856 in Greiz ) was a German doctor and politician.

Life

Born as the son of the pharmacist Johann Theophilus Stemler and Johanna Magdalena Regina geb. Prätorius, Stemler initially received private lessons and then from 1802 attended the grammar school in Zeitz. After graduating from high school, he studied natural sciences and medicine , until 1810 at the University of Jena , 1810 at the University of Tübingen and in 1911 at the Universities of Würzburg and Bamberg . He became a member of the old Saxonia Jena Landsmannschaft and in 1808 the still existing Corps Saxonia Jena . It is not clear whether he joined the old Franconia Tübingen country team in 1810 . In 1810 he was promoted to Dr. phil. and in 1811 in Würzburg as Dr. med is doing his doctorate.

Stemler settled in 1811 as a doctor in his hometown Zeulenroda. In 1813 he was provisionally and finally in 1816 the Princely Reuss-Plauisch-Greizer City and Country Physics in Zeulenroda and in the Burgk domain .

He was active as a writer. Among other things, he wrote several medical writings, the multi-volume history of the city of Zeulenroda and an encyclopedia on cosmos and geography.

Politician

Stemler was elected honorary mayor of Zeulenroda in 1832 with an “overwhelming” majority; until his death in 1856 he held the office. From 1832 to 1856 he was also a member of the Reuss Older Line landscape as Obergreizer municipal deputy . In 1832 he opposed the oppression of the liberals in the estates.

In the elections to the Frankfurt National Assembly of 1848 he stood as a candidate, but was defeated in the election. In 1850 he was a member of the state house of the Erfurt Union Parliament . He was a member of the Principality of Reuss Older Line, elected by the Landtag on the proposal of the Princely Government. As mayor in 1851, he played a key role in founding the Stadtsparkasse Zeulenroda .
