history

The first folklore festival

It can be said that Đakovački vezovi is now a recognized festival not only of folk costumes, embroidery and music of Slavonia ( Slavonia ) and Baranja ( Baranja ), but of the whole country ( Croatia ). But one must not forget that it took a lot of time and effort to create the image that this festival has today.
The first folklore festival Đakovački vezovi took place on July 2nd and 3rd, 1967 as a suitable festival on the occasion of the International Year of Tourism . Back then it was only planned as a one-time event. Because of the unexpected success, the large number of participants and the positive response that this event received in the media, it developed into a tradition. The Đakovački vezovi folklore festival has been held on the streets of Đakovo in early July for 40 years .

Visit of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Đakovački vezovi folklore festival became more and more interesting and well-known every year. Proof of this is also the visit of Queen Elizabeth II , which took place on October 20, 1972. The four-in-hand with Lipizzaners took part in a competition in Great Britain , where Queen Elizabeth II was and was made aware of the stud farm and the Đakovački vezovi folklore festival. With her husband Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh and their daughter Princess Anne Mountbatten-Windsor, Princess Royal , she visited Đakovo in 1972 .

After the parade of Croatian shepherds ( hrvatski ovčar ) in the pageant, there is also an exhibition of them.

Fairground

It can be said that the whole city will become one big festival square because there is no place in the center where the festival is not held. The opening takes place in front of the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. The street and the Strossmayer main square serve as auditoriums. After the parade, the participants of the festival go to the “Strossmayer Park” together with the spectators. The summer stage in Strossmayer Park is the focus of this festival. Groups, songs and dances take turns. The program lasts into the evening hours. After the parade, the wedding teams drive to the stud's hippodrome, where all horse races take place. All concerts take place in the large tent in the parking lot behind the All Saints Church . In the event of bad weather, all the festivities take place there.
