Dietrich Briesemeister

Dietrich Briesemeister (born May 12, 1934 in Altena ) is a German Romanist . His main research interests are neo-Latin literature in Latin America , Spain , Portugal , Mexico , Peru and Colombia as well as German-Spanish cultural relations from the 15th to the 20th century.

Life

Briesemeister studied Romance and Middle Latin philology and philosophy in Tübingen , Rennes and Munich from 1952 to 1959 . From 1959 to 1971 he worked in the Bavarian State Library , most recently as library director. From 1971 to 1987 Briesemeister was professor for Romance studies at the University of Mainz . Here he was director of the Institute for Spanish and Portuguese Language and Culture at the Department of Applied Linguistics, FAS, in Germersheim . From 1987 to 1999 Briesemeister was director of the Ibero-American Institute of Prussian Cultural Heritage and C4 professor for Ibero-Romance philology at the Free University of Berlin . From 1999 to 2004 he taught Ibero-Romance studies at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . Since 1996, Briesemeister has also been active as an expert reviewer for the German Research Foundation for Romance Literature. He was president of both the German Hispanic Association and the German Lusitanist Association for several years. In September 2016 he was appointed as a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española.
