Steffen Benthin (born May 18, 1970 ) is a German soccer player and police officer .
Athletic career
Benthin, who can be used in attack as well as in attacking midfield , made the transition from youth to men shortly before the change in the GDR at SG Dynamo Schwerin , for which he played in the second-rate GDR league until German reunification . In 1989/90 Schwerin reached the final of the FDGB Cup , in which Benthin came on in the 66th minute, but ultimately suffered a 2-1 defeat against first division club Dynamo Dresden . Nevertheless, by participating in the finals, the team qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup , as Dresden also won the GDR championship in the same year and thus took part in the national championship cup . In the cup winners' competition in 1990/91 , Schwerin then met Austria Vienna - renamed “Police SV Schwerin” as part of the reunification that has now taken place . Benthin completed both first round games for PSV, which, however, was eliminated from the competition with an overall result of 0-2. The league operation in 1990/91 , which was also considered a qualification for the future all-German league system, was just as unsuccessful for Schwerin, so that the team occupied the penultimate place at the end of the season, which only meant integration into the fourth-class Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state league .
In 1993 the club, now known as "FSV Schwerin", was promoted to the third-class Oberliga Nordost , in which Benthin became the leading player in the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons and in 1995 was also the top scorer, with the Oberliga only being fourth-class at that time was. Nevertheless, FC Hansa Rostock , who had been promoted from the 2nd Bundesliga to the Bundesliga in 1995/96 , became aware of Benthin and signed him from the summer of 1995. Until the winter break, however, Benthin could not prevail in Rostock and did not play a single competitive game for Hansa and was finally loaned to the second division Hannover 96 . Even with this Benthin could not establish himself as a regular player, following the second division second half of 1995/96 , in which he was relegated with Hanover, he returned to Rostock with two goals scored in a total of 13 missions.
Since Benthin was unable to assert himself again in Rostock in 1996/97 , he moved back to FSV Schwerin in the spring of 1997, where he was able to build on his previous performance in the following three and a half years and scored 56 goals in 79 league appearances. Nevertheless, Schwerin, now trading as "FC Eintracht Schwerin" after a merger, went from the fourth-class league to the fifth-class association league in 1999/2000 . This was followed by the immediate resurgence, as a result of which Benthin completed 50 games (22 goals) for Schwerin in the 2001/02 and 2002/03 Oberliga seasons , before joining the sixth-class national division VSG Weitenhagen in the summer of 2003 as a 33-year-old . In spring 2005 Benthin returned again to FC Eintracht Schwerin, who was relegated to the fifth-class association league at the end of the 2002/03 season. The brief change to VSG Weitenhagen from 2006 to 2007, which is now also playing in the association league, was finally followed by the change to the regional division Dynamo Schwerin, where Benthin once again advanced to the top scorer despite his age of 37 years. When he was 39, he changed clubs again and joined FC Insel Usedom. In 2013 Benthin left FC Insel Usedom and joined the district class team SV Empor Koserow, which is also based on Usedom , and acted as player-coach there . With the cancellation of SV Empor Koserow from ongoing matches and the agreed sporting cooperation between FC Insel Usedom and SV Empor Koserow during the winter break of the 2014/2015 season, Benthin switched to the reserve team of FC Insel Usedom.
Others
In 2007 Benthin, who in addition to his footballing career also worked as a police officer, was also honored for his services to the police sport. Among other things, he had participated in the European police championships in football in the four previous years and was able to win the title four times.
