Werner Steuer

Werner Steuer (born March 9, 1920 ) was a soccer player in the highest GDR soccer class, the Oberliga . With the BSG Chemie Leipzig he was GDR master in 1951.

When in 1949 the football league, later known as the GDR Oberliga, started for the first time in the Soviet occupation zone , a common football league for all eastern German states, ZSG Industrie Leipzig was one of the participating teams. The 29-year-old attacking player Werner Steuer was one of their squad. He was used for the first time in the league on October 9, 1949 and played in the encounter of the 5th match day ZSG Industrie - Vorwärts Schwerin (4-0) on the position of the half right striker. By the end of the season, Steuer was called up in all league games and so came to 22 missions in which he scored seven goals. In the following season 1950/51 the LeipzigerTeam that was now called BSG Chemie, GDR champions. For Steuer it was the last season in the league team. Between the 1st and 19th matchday he came, only sporadically, to eight league appearances and was twice successful as a goalscorer. After a total of 30 league games with nine goals, Steuer ended his career as a competitive athlete in the summer of 1951.
