Gerhard Franke (born July 7, 1933 in Erfurt ; † November 3, 1997 there ) was a German football player.

Athletic career

Gerhard Franke played at Motor Nord Erfurt between 1945 and 1950 and moved from there to Turbine Erfurt . At the age of 19 he made his debut in the East German league . In 1954 and 1955, the left-back with turbine was twice GDR champion.

In total, Gerhard Franke played 276 league games and scored 23 goals. He remained loyal to Erfurt despite three relegations in 1960, 1964 and 1966 and played 72 games in the second-rate GDR league during this time , scoring nine goals.

Between 1958 and 1959 he played six times for the GDR national soccer team . He made his debut on June 29, 1958 in a 1-1 draw against Poland in Rostock , and played his last international match on February 11, 1959 in Jakarta in a 2-2 draw against Indonesia . He was also on the field ten times for the GDR national B team.

During his time as an active player, Franke looked after various youth teams from Turbine Erfurt and from its successor club, FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt. In 1965 he was with the B-youth of the club GDR champion.
