Lothar Weise (born September 6, 1934 in Soest ) is a former German soccer player. He is one of the few footballers who could win a national title in both the GDR and the Federal Republic.

Athletic career

Weise learned to be a car mechanic and attended soccer school in Erfurt. At the age of 18 he played for Turbine Erfurt . Under coach Hans Carl the young player was there in 1954 and 1955 champions in the GDR league. At the same time, he was named the best young GDR player in 1955 and was rewarded with a trip to the international match of the Soviet Union against the reigning world champion from the Federal Republic .

When the then coach of the Stuttgarter Kickers and former GDR selection coach Oswald Pfau made contact with the Kickers for Weise, he took the chance at the beginning of 1957 and left the GDR while it was still possible. A joint escape with his teammate Gerhard Franke had been planned, but he did not want to leave his mother behind. In the GDR, the newspaper Thüringer Nachrichten called him a "traitor to the fatherland". At Kickers, as an East German, it was not easy for Weise at the beginning, especially since he was initially imposed by FIFA with the mandatory one-year ban and was held up by a few injuries. A year later he moved to VfB Stuttgart , with whom he achieved his greatest football performance when he won the DFB Cup , when he scored the decisive goal to make it 4: 3 in the 113th minute of the final against Fortuna Düsseldorf .

The club showed their appreciation after this game by arranging a gas station in Fellbach. At that time, top footballers could not earn large sums of money. The basic salary was 360 DM and for each point there was another 100 DM. The livelihood therefore had to be covered in a different way. For Lothar Weise, the petrol station represented everyday work. Up to 80 cars had to be washed by hand a day, sometimes until shortly before the game.

Shortly before the introduction of the Bundesliga , for which Weise had qualified with VfB, he ended his higher-class career. He then ended his career at SV Germania Bietigheim in the highest amateur class, the third-class 1st Amateur League Württemberg at the time .

Further career

After he ended his career in 1963, he worked as a mineral oil salesman for 25 years. In 1968/69 he was a coach at VfR Heilbronn , then he coached FC Thun . From 1970 he worked for 1. FC Normannia Gmünd , with whom he was promoted to the 1st amateur league and in the 1971/72 season was runner-up behind SSV Ulm in 1846 . This qualified the team for the German amateur championship in 1972 , in which they were only eliminated in the semi-finals against the later title holder FSV Frankfurt . He also worked as a trainer in Aschaffenburg before settling in Affalterbach .

In 1990, Weise had a tumor that was successfully removed. Even today, Weise works for VfB and often gives stadium tours. He still plays for the senior team at VfB and meets up with other former VfB players for training every Monday.
