Herbert Pankau (born October 4, 1941 in Blankwitt ) is a former German soccer player. He played for the soccer department of SC Empor Rostock and the FC Hansa Rostock , which was founded from it, in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR soccer . Pankau ran in 25 games for the GDR national team .
career
Pankau, born during the Second World War in a rural community in the Flatow district in what was then the Pomeranian province of the German Empire , later grew up in Grevesmühlen in western Mecklenburg . There he began as a teenager in 1950 at SG Grevesmühlen , one year later as BSG Empor and from 1958 as BSG Einheit, with football. In 1960 the 18-year-old footballer went to what was then SC Empor Rostock, from which FC Hansa Rostock emerged at the end of 1965. In the previous season, the club had landed in fourth place in the GDR league. Pankau was used as an attacking runner in midfield and immediately fought for a regular place in the team. At the same time he completed a degree at the Rostock Engineering School. With Pankau began the “silver series” of the Rostockers, who were runner-up four times within seven years and were twice in the GDR Cup finals ( FDGB Cup ). That Pankau played a significant role in this is proven by the fact that in 1963 and 1966 he scored the best score in the soccer magazine “fuwo”. In a 1963 survey by the newspaper “Deutsches Sportecho”, the upper division coaches voted Pankau as the best “right runner” (midfield) of the past season. For several years he was the team captain of FC Hansa.
His football skills also paved the way for Pankau to pursue an international career in various GDR national teams . As a junior player , he was part of the junior national team , with whom he played six international matches as a midfielder in 1960. In 1962 and 1963 he completed three international matches with the U-23 team and a B international in 1963. On December 9, 1962, at the age of 22, he played his first international A match against Mali in Bamako . In the 2-1 victory of the GDR national team , he was used as a left midfielder. By 1967 Pankau was used in a total of 25 international matches (four goals), including nine European and World Cup qualifiers. His last international A match played Pankau after DFV and DFB version on December 6, 1967 in Bucharest with a 1-0 victory over Romania as part of the qualification for the Mexico City games . With the GDR Olympic selection , Pankau completed 14 qualification and final round games (one goal) as well as three other test games. At the Olympic football tournament in 1964 , he was in the team that won the bronze medal in Tokyo.
After Pankau had completed 257 league games for SC Empor and FC Hansa Rostock and scored a total of 30 goals, he finished at the end of the 1970/71 season, in which he had played 22 of the 26 games played and scored four goals, 29- year his career as a league footballer. In the chronicle of FC Hansa it says that the then 30-year-old wanted to protest against political interference in GDR football by saying goodbye to the league early . From 1971 to 1975 he played for BSG Schiffahrt / Hafen Rostock . In his first season he helped the BSG to move up from the district league to the second-rate GDR league . He then played ten league games in 1972/73 until the winter break and scored three goals. Later he was only used in the 2nd team, which played fourth class. At the end of his sporting career, Pankau was still active for some time with his old home team, Einheit Grevesmühlen.
After his active time, Pankau worked as a qualified engineer at Rostocker Seereederei and other companies in a managerial position and went into self-employment after the political change in 1989 . In 1991 the Rostock sports clubs elected him President of the City Sports Association.
